Depression is a symptom of several mental illnesses.

Depressive and mood disorders include Major Depression Single Episode, Major Depression Recurrent, Dysthymic Disorder, Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood, and Depressive Disorder Not Otherwise Specified.

There's Bipolar Disorder Unspecified, Bipolar Disorder can be Depressed, Manic, Hypomanic, or Mixed. There's Cyclothymic Disorder which is a mild form of Bipolar, Bipolar Disorder II which is long periods of Major depression with brief hypomanic episodes. There's also Mood Disorder Not Otherwise Specified if the doctor can't decide if it's straight depression or bipolar.

Schizoaffective Disorder is a form of Schizophrenia with features of Bipolar Disorder.

Borderline Personality Disorder can include mood changes that are similar to Bipolar Disorder.

There's also Drug Induced Mood Disorders and Mood Disorder Due To General Medical Condition (like depression caused by thyroid problems or whatever).

Try putting DSM-IV Mood Disorders on a search engine and you'll find all kinds of information.

Major criteria to diagnose depression are:

1.Constant irritability/sadness/tension feeling;
2.Decreased interest in usual activities;
3.Energy loss and feeling tired despite lack of activity;
4.Worthlessness feelings, hopelessness, or guilt;
5.Restlessness/feeling slowed down;
6.Sleeping disorders (difficulty sleeping/sleeping too much or too little etc.);
7.Decreased ability to make decisions or concentrate;
8.A change in appetite (loss or gain weight);
9.Thoughts of suicide or death.
To diagnose major depression, a person must have at least 5 (and one of them must be the first or second symptom) of the 9 symptoms above, for at least two weeks.
Dysthymia; is another mood disorder that people who have it may feel mildly depressed on most days over a period of at least two years. They have many symptoms resembling major depression, but with less severity.
Depression symptoms may surface with other mood disorders such as bipolar mood disorder, seasonal depression or postpartum depression.(after giving a birth) These mood disorders resemble the major depression, but they have differences in their periods, therapy and diagnosis criters.
People who has psychosis may show depressive symptoms too. Especially catatonic schizophrenia is a good example for that.
And much of the personality disorders can include depression. (hesitant or shy personality disorder, histironic personality disorder, narcistic personality disorder, schizoid and schizotypal personality disorders)
And there are a lot of medicines and toxins can cause depressive symptoms. (e.g.: Chronic alcohol use is an important trigger for major depression.)
