Is Manhattan NYC an ok place to live and raise a child/ren?

Yes, I lived in Manhattan for several years as a child, it was wonderful. I've great memories, it's a very cultured place, there are many, many museums, art galleries, planetariums, the schools are great. In short, it's a very ideal place to raise children.

Personally, Ive always wanted to live there and raise my kids in Manhattan. I dont see why not. I live right near by, but growing up, I always saw Manhattan as this magical place with so many things to see and explore. Its a fun place to live if your an adult and as a kid, I can imagine its fun as well, it kinda brings a sense of independence. Plus the schools are great there and ofcourse, the oppurtunities for jobs are endless. And it has many lovely and affordable neighborhoods and homes for the average family to live in. It has a bit of everything for everyone. So i dont see why not.

I could never live in Manhattan, myself. But it's an absolutely incredible place to visit, even for an extended period. I was a consultant for Kraft General Foods in the early 90's. I worked in White Plains and would go into Manhattan on the weekends. What a place! I can't imagine raising kids there, myself. If I were in a situation where I had to work in Manhattan, I'd buy a place in Westchester County and commute. But that's me. I moved from Chicago to Salt Lake City two years ago and love it out here. For $200k, you get a house and a third of an acre, depending on where you are. Of course, it's quite the schlep to Radio City Music Hall, or Broadway, but it's all a trade-off.

Manhattan below 110th St (the rich and predominantly White part of Manhattan) is expensive as hell - so mostly rich people live down there. They have really expensive private schools and grossly overfunded elitist public schools, as well as platoons of nannies, for their priviliged offspring.

Manhattan above 110th St (the working class and Black and Latino part of our borough) is far more reasonable rentwise - the schools up here are underfunded, but the teachers and support staff make do with minimal resources. Also, our communities are vibrant, multicultural and historic, so this part of Manhattan is a great place to raise kids.

As you can see from the many responses, almost everyone says yes. There was a time when many moved when their children entered school. but now people try to stay. The big problem is finding more than 2 bedroom apartments in newer buildings.

listen for some idot to say the bronx is bad its like its own city with a population of like 2 million people and like 500,000 different neighboorhoods.

to say its so getto is stupid though north manhattan i think is better for kids make sure they get excercise.

I dont know actully Manhattan, Bronx, LI are some cities where crimes are #1 because for example there is lots of shootings, killings, and robberies but if its safe and everything ok but i sugest u think twice or do what u think ok good luck finding out!

it's a wonderful place if you have a yearly household income of at LEAST $250,000. Earning any less you and your child would not be able to do very much besides stay home and watch Tv in which case you would be better off in the suburbs where you would have some elbow room if nothing else.

Yes, I have several friends who raised their children there, but it is expensive. A two bedroom apartment in NYC is very expensive and food will cost more. Depending on how your child tests out, he or she can go to some of the finest schools in the world for free like Bronx Science or Stuyvesant. One of my friend's daughter went to the UN school and then later to Stuyvesant. They can go to college for little money at CCNY, Queens College, Hunter. You get annual passes to wonderful museums like the Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art with mummies and armour as well as art works, the Bronx Zoo just takes contributions on Wednesdays, there are lots of free programs you can take your child to, or pay for things like the Rockettes Christmas (with all these things if you know the ropes you can go for half price). You can subscribe to the last minute Broadway tickets and take your child for $9. We took our daughter with last minute tickets to dance events, comedies, Othello with James Earl Jones, wonderful experiences.
