He needs to go back to the vet. You are right, it will not heal by itself.

Maybe confine his movements until the wound is healed?

Too bad! That's sad. If it were my dog, I'd take him for a second opinion at another vet's office. The stump will not heal well if there is incomplete closure over the bony stump. During surgery, skin and muscle that has been cut can be brought over the end of the bone to provide a smooth stump. After forelimb amputations a soft padded bandage is usually placed over the surgical site. The bandage provides protection for the wound and thus makes the animal more comfortable. It also reduces swelling and fluid accumulation at the surgical site. For hind limb amputations bandages are seldom applied. Which leg was amputated and for what reason? A tumor?

To begin with Celebrex is not an antibiotic, it is for swelling and inflammation. There are pain pills and antibiotics the vet should have provided your dog with. He also should have given you an E collar. I think if you feel the vet doesn't seem to care about your dog I would find another vet. I had a Doberman that had to have his back leg amputated and he done fine during the healing process. During that time I also put a pair of shorts on him to cover the amputee. Of course you would have to take them off before you took him outside to do his business. The shorts had an elastic waist band and I sewed the bottom of that leg closed. Please seek another vet ASAP tomorrow morning. I wish your dog all the best and hope he is much better real soon!!!!

I'm so sorry, I would take him back to the vet and ask them for some suggestions on what you need to do to stop this from happening again. Good luck

take him back to the vet (it wont heal if you dont')
confine him..Why isn't he being confined...the vet should have told you after his surgery that he will need to be limited on his movement.
put an old undershirt on him, and tie the arm closed where the surgery is.
and lastly, get him an elizabethan collar, because it will start to itch, and he will tear at it.
