To describe: pulsatile tinnitus is a sensation/audible pulse heard in one or both ears; sound of heart-beat in ear, especially at night or when under stress or exertion; causes are numerous, but most commonly seem to be related to sinus/middle ear problems (pressure in my case);also with high blood pressure, a "narrowing" of the carotid artery, or vein running too close to ear-drum. Less common, but still worrisome is a "glomous" or benign tumor growing on the auditory nerve.

It could be that your eustachian tube is slightly blocked. This will sometimes cause you to hear your blood pumping through the various vessels in and around the ear and ear canal. One trick you might try if chewing gum doesn't make the ear "pop" (equalize the pressure) - put about a capful of hydrogen peroxide solution in your ear while lying on your opposite side with your head on a towel. Be sure that the towel is light in color, as peroxide can sometimes cause color to fade, as with bleach, should it get on the towel. You should hear some bubbling; very loud. This is normal. Should you feel any pain, immediately let the peroxide out of your ear and gently dry it out as much as possible. This is a bad sign, and you should consult a physician if this is the case. However, should the solution simply bubble incessantly, give it enough time to settle a bit (at least ten minutes), then pour it out and go on about your business. This may well help you. At any rate, it can't (normally) hurt at all, and can help with the general cleanliness of your inner ear. Please keep in mind, though, that some cerumen (ear wax) is necessary for the health of the ear, and no attempt should be made to excessively clean out the ear. Regular maintenance with a gently manipulated q-tip is sufficient to maintian proper hygiene. Good luck, and have fun listening to the bubbles!

A safe & inexpensive way to see if it's nothing more than wax build up is to go to a "vitamin store" or a grocery store like Wild Oats or Whole Foods & get yourself some Ear Candles & candle your ears. The instructions come in the box ... simple, painless, inexpensive & you can do it in less than 30 minutes for both ears, if you only candle each ear once (although if you've never done it before, chances are you'll need to do it several times to get as much wax out of the ears). If the problem persists, it's best you consult a professional.

Pulsatile tinnitus.
Tinnitus is a noise that originates within your ear rather than from an external source. The sound may be described as hissing, squealing, buzzing or roaring. In pulsatile tinnitus, the sound follows the same rhythm as your heartbeat.
Tinnitus isn't a disease. It's a symptom that can have a number of causes, including accumulated wax in the ears and exposure to loud noises. Pulsatile tinnitus, also called objective tinnitus, may be due to irregularities in a blood vessel that passes into or close by the inner ear. Although the noise of tinnitus may be annoying, the condition is rarely a symptom of a serious underlying problem.
Sometimes, a doctor can hear the sounds of pulsatile tinnitus with a stethoscope. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Your doctor can discuss with you steps you can take to reduce the severity of the noise or to better cope with the noise.

Sounds like a wax build up which is nothing to worry about, you may need to have your ear syringed. Yes I know it sounds bad but it is really quite a nice experience. The doctor will put a kidney shaped tray under your ear and using a syringe (no needle) squirt warm water into the affected ear to flush out the hardened wax. Not painful at all.

when i was around 8 years old i suffered a severe ear infection and got a perforated ear drum, now whenever i am coming down with a cold my left ear rings and it increases in volume till my cold goes away, it is highly annoying as sometimes at night it keeps me awake, i don't think there is anything the doctors can do for me, but as suggested in other answers maybe get your ears syringed as it may clear up your problem, you would most probably have to get this done every couple of years as the wax buildup in the ear gets worse again
