a heat anticipator is designed to turn off a thermostat, a little bit before the actual temperature. Its designed to reduce extreme temperature swings in a house.
The old- style heat anticipator was a resistor that caused the amperage to rise, "fooling" the thermostat into turning off early.

Newer thermostats do this digitally.
