I have dark brown hair and I want to get highlights in like a golden brown. BUT my friend just got highlights and hers is still dark underneath (in a pony tail) and she has the highlights on top and in her pony tail. I really like the look with the dark hair underneath! but whats its called?! she has no idea haha.

That would just be topical highlites or something like that. If you tell the beautician thats want you want she will do it for ya! Or for those kind of highlites maybe just get a store highlighter kit, its pretty easy to do.

Most professionals in the industry would call this technique a partial highlight - meaning that the foil pattern is concentrated more around the face and natural part of the hair. The foils stop in the back of the head near the ocipital bone - leaving the nape area natural and free of lightened hair. However, if you've been previously colored in the nape area, it may be necessary to tint back the hair in the nape area - typically all the hair below the ocipital and top of the ears. Go for it, sister.

I had this style done to my hair before school started. I have medium brown hair. I had blonde highlights put on the top layer and had the bottom layer of my hair dyed very dark brown. I don't think there is really a name for it, but just describe it to your hairstylist and make sure to tell her you DO NOT want to look like a skunk! That is the worst!

Yuor best bet is to go to a salon and have it done. Bring in a picture, and show them, even decribe if you want. If you can't get a picture you should still be okay trying to describe how you want it. It's a pretty common hair style.

When I got my hair done like that, I just explained to the stylist that I want a darker color underneath. She knew what to do. =)
