I'm a trained artist in the uk, and have recently done a few murals for clients, but I'm unsure what is a reasonable day rate to charge. Also, should I include the cost of materials in my day rate, or bill them seperately?

I am not sure what the typical day rate or (by piece commission) in the UK is.
I am assuming that you have great talent.
I usually give day rates.I find that in this way it gives me the credibility of being a professional and capable person.
By handling.everything I do not have to bother my Clients with the cost of the materials, I tell them that it is included.
I do the following things to arrive at my fees;
I factor in my time,materials,travel time and an assistant if needed.
I am hoping that the following links or sites below will be able to help you establish a fee for your speciality.
Here is an Artist run site based in Haworth, UK. Young contemporary art, artists' resources, networking opportunities and creative web design.

The next link is to various sites, you will find an Agency representing mural painters, perhaps you could enquire as to what the going rate in the UK is.
You can ask other artists there if they would help you to establish a price list. Contact them through Decorative Artists Business Listings,E-mail, or obtain a list through your regional Labour and Ministry Services.
Other links here maybe interesting to you as well.

Do not worry, in short while, you will feel like you are wearing a comfortable pair of old shoes.
Be sure of yourself and your success .
Good Luck, I hope this helped,
Cheers!

you could charge them an hourly rate + materials. If you have a job what do you make there hourly? I know trained artists that work in the animation industry make 15+ dollars an hour. You need to determine how much your time is worth. I havn't seen any of your work, so I don't know how complex these murals are or how big but you need to make a living wage like everybody elce. Don't sell yourself short because you feel bad about asking for the money- your earning it and deserve a fair wage. 15$ an hour or more doesn't seem too outlandish and just as a plummer doesn't take the money for pipes out of his pay cheque, nither should you for paint and other supplies.
