a client just called and asked for Geoff, we said he no longer works here and the guy laughed and said "yeah, knew that would happen, the bread always falls butter side down" - what do reckon he meant by that???

It's a Russian proverb. It means that if a bad thing can happen it will happen inevitably. (In other words, if a bread covered with butter falls from your hands it will inevitably fall in such a way that it will make a mess on the floor). It's the Russian equivalent of Murphy's law.

He was probably referring to "Sod's Law" ... It's a belief that in any event - The most irritating/unhelpful/annoying outcome is the most likely to happen.

i.e. You're really hungry and want a sandwich. You drop the bread and it lands butter-side down. Thereby rendering it useless.

If something is going to happen it will happen with the most inconvenience and mess. IE if bread fell butter side up, there would be little or no cleanup.

It is like "Murphy's Law" - "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong"

This is pessimistic point of view, which should not be adapted by a person who wants to be happy .
