In my experience, I have found the answer to be no, but you may disagree or prove me otherwise with examples. I am not poor, but we are definately lower-middle class (paycheck to paycheck living) and I have tried to build relationships with other people my age who are wealthy and it doesn't work out. They want to go out to dinner or "do lunch" at fancy-to-do restaurants/ and pubs and I can't afford to. It takes a couple of times of them inviting me to come along to these outings, and they realize I can't afford it, then they don't really call me again or have much to do with me other than saying hello when passing in public.

I totally know that we can be friends no matter what the financial situation is, just be sure you are looking for a friend that is worthy of your true friendship and if you are a friend they will reciprocate. I came from alto of wealth(not always a better friend) My best friend lives paycheck to paycheck and she has always been there for me no matter what. I love her friendship she has taught me what a true friend is and I am grateful for her friendship. Good luck dear but don't just look at the financial to find friends they come in all situations even poor.

Yes they can. I have been very good friends with a family who owns a major hotel/casino chain in Reno/Las Vegas/Rio/Canada/New Jersey...etc one of their daughters and I met in camp as kids and we "clicked" although we only see one another occasionally because of our own life's getting in the way we have been very good friends keep in touch and see each other at least once a month. Sometimes we go to "fancy" restaurants, sometimes she will come to my home and we have lunch, play cards, just talk.Your expierences are different because YOU choose different friends than I do.

BTW I make less than $20,000 a year so I consider myself pretty damned poor as far as monetary goes. Rich in so many more ways...

They may just be asking you to go out of respect.
I feel like if they really wanted you to go, one or both would ask to pay your way. You could always babysit or something for them in return.

I really hope you do not take this offensive. I am just guessing anyway.

Get to know them without going out to eat. Chat with them on-line, e-mail, whatever. It is important to gather information as to how to become rich if this is your desire. We live in America, and anything is possible. Ask them questions they wouldn't mind answering.
