We only do it when we run out of our usual wet food. Is it bad for them or not?

It's not going to hurt them to have it every once in a while. They love it. (People that say not to give it to them must not have read the ingredients on a lot of cat food packages.)

The very strong flavor may make them picky so that they refuse to eat other foods ('tuna junkies').

Don't feed them tuna in oil; it can cause vitamin deficiency, causing them to block the intake of vitamins so that even supplements won't help. Tuna in water is less risky for this factor.

Tuna also got a lot of mercury in it (regardless of whether it's packed in oil or water), but that shouldn't be a serious problem if it's an occasional treat or replacement. Don't ever feed them tuna exclusively.

It is not advisable to give people tuna to a cat, because there is not the proper nourishment in it for a cat. Now if you do this on occasion, it will not harm the cat, but I found out the hard way, that my cat became a very finicky eater, because I gave him people tuna, thinking it would be better for him , than cat tuna.....NOT TRUE!!!

No, but try to use high quality albicore that was canned in water... Do not use tuna canned in oil, in fact you shouldn't eat tuna canned in oil... I use canned tuna as a treat for my cat, he knows exactly where the tuna is kept and starts going crazy anytime I open that cabinet door.

All the canned meat humans eat is cooked, destroying the taurine in the meat and that is an essential amino acid that cats must have in their diet, lack of which can lead to heart problems and/or blindness in cats.

I dislike tuna myself and have never had it around my house so have never been tempted to give it to my cats. So it's much better to keep the supply of cat food up and not have to resort to any canned meat other than cat food. Tuna can also cause a fatal anemia in cats if used regularly.

No, we give our cats tuna every once in a while, and the vet said it's fine.
