I wouldn't tip half the people you've listed either, and especially not the postman, UPS/FedEx driver, or garbagemen. Does anyone really tip those guys? They make more money than I do some of the time!
With the full-service gas station, I will usually tip because they don't make much money and work hard to earn the tip by cleaning windows, checking the oil, etc.
Doormen sometimes should be tipped, for instance if they carry bags for you, but I wouldn't do it all the time. Goodness knows we can all open doors on our own!

Tsk, tsk. Cheapness is a sickness. And it is rude.
A person tips to show appreciation for the people that serve him or her. Tipping shows gratitude.
You don't tip everybody, silly. Buy an etiquette book and it will tell you who to tip, and what to leave.
You don't tip the UPS man, who told you that?
You are supposed to tip the doorman on Christmas, it is a common courteousy.
If you don't tip waiters, then you are stingy. And you are courageous. They can do anything to your food in the kitchen... And besides, you will get less service. Small gestures of gratitude go a long way.
I imagine you complain about a lot in your life.
Let me tell you, that the people who serve you have a lot more class than you do.

I will tip a waiter, barber, and cab driver yea. but no, im not going to tip the garbage men, or the postman....my mail is always late and they take my garbage when they feel like it. even so, no....they make enough money, and with there jobs they dont survive on tips like waiters, and pizza drivers.

And every country is different. I was reading about another country where you NEVER tip your cabdriver and always tip the mail carrier! Go figure.
I personally tip mainly those that make less than me. I tip waiters, waitresses, my hairdresser and cabdrivers. I don't use valet service or wouldn't have a doorman because of that tipping thing. I don't use full service gas either.Otherwise, I would feel impolite or rude. Nobody has the same mail carrier, newspaper carrier etc anymore so that takes care of that!

TIP means "to insure promptness" but you do have a point. I agree that the garbage man and mailman do get paid enough but the idea is that they do this in all forms of weather and a tip at Christmas is a way to say thanks. I know that we cannot tip everyone but most of us are in the same boat.
As far as waitresses go I totally agree they never get paid what they are worth but I have seen some hair salons that charge an arm and a leg.
We do get bonus's on the job and that is pretty basically a tip.
By the way. can I have a tip for this answer?

i don't feel compelled to tip everyone. the waiter/ess at the restaurant will get a diminished tip or none if i'm dissatisfied with the service i receive, or will get more than the customary percentage if i'm really satisfied with him or her. a friend and i went to a dinner show in vegas years ago. the waiter was horrible, but had the audacity to advise us that we did not include a tip when we paid the bill.
i will tip the baggage handler at the airport if he meets me curbside, i don't tip at the gas station unless a certain person is there as he does more than pump the gas and he is very gracious person.
i work as hard for my money as the next hard worker, so i don't part it with it easily.

A agree. I live in Vegas and you have to tip the valet and food service people that is fine. However, when you wait for a taxi at a hotel, they expect you to give a tip to the guy that opens the cab door. I do if I have luggage or am with a group of people but thank you is what they usually get from me.

UPS- NO
Fed-Ex-NO
Gas guy-NO
Garbage man- yes ( sometimes we throw a lot out, they always take everything, and NEVER throw the pails)
Door man- "C'mon"
Foriegn dude that poured my coffee in "Drunken Donuts"- "Sorry Dude"
Mail man- Yes (they don't make much $, and they put the pkg. in the door when raining, they DON'T have to do that)
It's O.K to over tip for breakfast
Anyone that helps you out of a jam, or points you to a good car deal, or does something out of the way for you without making a fuss, should at least get "Lunch" on you.

Well you are suppose to tip anyone that provides any kind of service for you. But, I agree with you. If I tipped everyone I would not be able to pay my bills. The only people I tip are waiters and waitresses and hairdressers.

I agree.... a tip is a bonus for when they go above and beyond their 'basic job' and have treated you extraordinarily well.... I don't tip a waiter/ress at a buffet restaurant, they don't do anything... i don't tip the guy taking tickets at the theater.... but people get offended if they do a sucky job and you don't leave a tip...
