Well I only take my dog to the vet once a year to get the shots, because he doesnt get sick. So all I have to pay for is the food and whatever luxuries I give him. Per month it would add up to about $60, thats in Australian dollars by the way.

I have a small pet also. I'm not quite sure how much it costs but I can tell you one thing- a small dog would cost less than a big dog! They eat less food (mine only goes through a large thing of dog food every 3 or 4 months) and vet visits only occur once a year, at about $50 each. Also, small pets are nice because you can bring them in the car, etc. without having to make a big deal of it.

Go to petfinder.com to find a small dog in your area. Lots of rescues, shelters and humane societies out there. I paid $100 for mine. I take mine to the groomer because its a Maltese mix and that costs me 20 a month.
He came with all his shots up to date and the vet check up was 14.00 find a good economical vet clinic.. a good vet doesn't need all the potted plants, carpets and smiling receptionists.
And consider an adult or senior dog.. puppies aren't always the way to go.

Why don't you call the vet to see what they cost. States vary, in fact different counties vary.
Write a list of everything you'll need for the dog - vet bills, collar, leash, toys, food, flea/tick treatment, training, and a possibly emergency fund THEN find out how much it all costs. It's in writing in front of you and you can budget around it.

When you first get the puppy,it cost to get the vaccinations and you will need to put it on heart worm meds. but other than food it will not cost much more.Little dogs don't eat a lot ( like my 3 labs. do ) so unless your pup gets sick later on and needs a vet it will not cost much.

i have a toy fox terrier who doesn't even break 5 pounds. after paying for her, her shots and inital vet bills, she really doesnt' cost a lot of money. mostly she costs time. not many seem to consider how much time it will take to care for a dog, they just think of money wise.
