what are the job prospects and starting salary in environmental engineering?

The answer to your question will depend on your experience, your industry and location. An engineer will make more in California than in Alabama.

If you get a job with a state agency, your pay will be lower than industry. If you get a job as a consultant, you may make more than an entry level regulator, but not as much as somebody in industry.

If you get a job with industry, the pay will also depend on the size of the company, your experience (if you are graduating from college - your GPA).

I hate to be so vague, but if you want to find out what the pay range is, I would go to CareerBuilder.com and search environmental engineer positions in your region. Then, read the descriptions and pays for the position you read. You could use that as a general guideline.

Depends on who wins the next Presidential election.

Under Bush, the EPA isn't doing much, so job prospects are slim.
