Hi, I live in Italy. Okay, first you should take Italian lessons to learn proper grammar. Then you should live in Italy for a long period of time. It's a good idea to become friends with Italians who don't speak or understand English. From experience, I've noticed that foreigners who have a lot of English-speaking Italian friends tend to speak half-and-half. I was an exchange student my junior year of college, and I was the only American living in an apartment with only Italian-speaking girls. All the other Americans either were in an apartment with other Americans or with Italians who spoke really good English. When they had difficulties they would turn to English, when I had difficulties I had to explain myself using other words (all in Italian). Well, by the end of the year I was the one who spoke the best Italian (or at least that's what the other Americans said).
A lot of foreigners come to Italy and learn Italian from television, radio, or listening to Italians......but they don't speak proper Italian (the grammar is all wrong)....that's why you should at least learn the grammar at school.

The very best way is to go to Italy and live there for a while, but not everyone can afford to do that. There are some good computer programs that can help you learn a conversational Italian.

The best way is complete immersion, but this method is a bit expensive. However, if you do decidde to do this, go to a rural city or town rather than a big tourist area. You'll find yourself relying on Engliosh if you stay in somewhere like Rome or Venice.

Total immersion...That's how I leaned Norwegian. If you can't go to Italy...listen to Italian Music, videos, and whatever you can get your hands on so you hear it all the time.

Listen to a cassette tape/cd in the car when driving..or in your walkman/cd player with your headphones. Also there are some wonderful music and movies that you can watch! Good Luck! It is easier to learn it by listening , then reading it (at least for me with foreign languages)
