I thought that was a parable and sign to the disciples. He had just gone into Jerusalem, only to get rejected, and knew the leaders were plotting to put him to death. He was indicating that Israel had not born fruit - when the messiah came they were not bearing the fruit the prophets had toiled for. So the fig tree was cursed figuratively to indicate the wilting that would take place.
Indeed after Christ had gone, the Jewish nationalists got more extreme, and eventually the Romans, who were a brutal lot when facing opposition, destroyed the temple, and about 100 years on after another fierce rebellion against the brutal Romans the Jewish people except a few were forced to leave the land (and live in other lands until the recreation of Israel in 1948).
I don't think we can apply this to ourselves as individuals. We have to draw close to Jesus "Abide in me, and you shall bear much fruit"; if you abide, its God's responsibility to a great degree. There are so many distractions its not easy to abide.

Jesus commanded the fig tree to not bear fruit anymore. Then, it Withered and Died.
If you stop doing Things , you'll wither and possible die.
I have known several People who I worked at the same place, Retire, sit down, they Lasted about 5 Years. They coulda' lived a whole lot longer.
Your Mind, Body need to Keep Bearing Fruit, or you could Wither.
Hope this helps.

Chill, that you even care means that God is talking to your heart.
God is long suffering towards you:
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Did you know that some of the fruit you can bear include the following:
Galatians 5:22, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control."
May God bless you in your diligence to bear these fruit!

There is hope. Don't lose sight of what can be yours. There wasn't much hope for me either, until I had a Devine Experience! Here is how you can claim what was lost. Acts 2:38. Repent of your sins, go down into the water in the name of Jesus Christ for the washing away of those sins, and when you come out of the water you will be able to feel that your burden of sin is gone. But wait, it gets better. When you get the Holy Ghost Acts 2:4, you will be on such a high, it will last for days!! It took me 2 months to get it. But I got it!! St. Mark 16:17 will tell you what you can do with the Holy Ghost!! It is a wonderful experience, it's hard to imagine it!!!

Only curse a tree when you have absoluteley no botanical knowledge. Otherwise follow a better example than Jesus cursing, not an endearing trait.

Jesus cursed a tree, not you. If you don't have a relationship with Jesus, then I suggest you get to know him -- start with the book of John in the Bible. Jesus is the reason for our hope. You can email me if you'd like to talk more.

Israel is the fig tree and He used the Jewish people as an example to the world for people who forget God so you've got a lot of hope. Get busy and don't forget God. If you got the opportunity to bear fruit, would you know how? Do you know the Lord as your Savior? Call upon His name and ask Him to reveal Himself to you. Example: Jesus, come into my heart and reveal Yourself to me so I can know You.
If there is a breath left in you, there is hope.

Jesus also told a story of a fig tree that was to be cut down but the gardener begged for another chance...for one more year....
There is Hope for you....Ask Him for another chance....He's a God of Love and Mercy. He'll help you. He's promised you a hope and a future.
