My cousin is 15 and a 1/2. She just got her permit yesterday and the whole fam decided to go in on a down payment for her first car. She rattled off a bunch of ideas for us... cars she liked, etc. We have a pretty good idea of which one we're getting, but I'd like some non-biased opinions.

Her choices:
1994 Jeep Cherokee
2002 Saturn Ion
2002 Mazda Protege
2003 Hyundai Tiburon

I hope this helps, it's a good article from Forbes, about cars for teens & what you/she should be looking for:

The Protege will probably be the best choice if she has a long drive and will be buying her own gas. However, the Tiburon will probably be a little safer if she gets in an accident. If the commute is not too long, I'd go with the Tiburon. Stay away from the Saturn because of likely maintenance and the Jeep because of age and gas mileage.

If I were yall, I wouldn't put out a lot of money on a car. She just needs something to get her from point A to point B.

Get her a late 90s-2003 model vehicle.

All the ones you mentioned are good because they get good gas mileage and have relatively small maintenance issues.

If it were my choice of a car, I would choose the Tib but because she is a young driver and will learn much more about driving I would get the oldest model (Cherokee).... she is only 15 so she does only need something probably that will get her to and from school and school activities.

What are these people smoking? The Cherokee does not get good gas mileage... its an SUV and gets 15 mpg in the city!!!!!!!

If I had to choose from those, I'd rather ride the bus.

I would go with the Jeep because they are good on gas and they're big, but not too big...
