Ok look, alot of these guys that are answering don't have a clue what it is like to give your life to your country. Most people belive what is told to them in the media which saddens me deeply because it is hardly ever true. The Border Patrol is a very good job with excellent pay and benefits. The job is also very rewarding with tons of overtime. Yes defentaly start getting in shape NOW! You need to focus on running endurance and lots of upper body strength. Plus brush up on as much Spanish grammer as possible. Good luck!

Border Chief Carlos Carillo seems to have a problem understanding what his job is. He needs to be fired. Tancredo is correct. We should not have a person, as head of the U.S. Border Patrol, who does not have a clue as to what exactly the U.S. Border Patrol is. >> "The United States Department of Homeland Security, through the Directorate of Border and Transportation Security, has responsibility for securing our nation's borders. The Directorate of Border and Transportation Security -- or BTS -- also assumed the responsibility for enforcing our immigration laws through the creation of a new border enforcement agency. During the creation of the new Department of Homeland Security, the U.S Border Patrol, along with the legacy-INS inspection division, the legacy-U.S. Customs inspection division, and the Department of Agriculture’s plant and animal inspection service were merged into a new agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, also known as CBP. While the traditional mission of the Border Patrol has always been the detection and prevention of the illegal entry of aliens and smuggling of illegal contraband into the United States anywhere other than a designated port-of-entry, the dawn of the age of terrorism within our nation added a new priority mission: to detect and prevent the entry of terrorists and their weapons into the United States. The Border Patrol never sleeps. Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week the men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol are doing everything possible with the resources available to them to secure the borders of the United States of America against the unknown. Keeping America’s borders safe is a very dangerous assignment. More than 90 Border Patrol officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. Thousands have been wounded. The Border Patrol’s mission has increased over the years. Today, the Border Patrol must also operate within the interior of United States — monitoring roads and even some airports where illegal aliens concentrate. In addition, other government agencies have granted the Border Patrol certain additional powers. " Just because the Border Patrol now has added duty of "detect and prevent terrorist entry" does NOT mean that all the OTHER duties are thrown out with the dirty bathwater. What is Carillos problem? He can't chew gum and walk at the same time. Someone who is able to handle the ENTIRE job needs to be head of the US Border Patrol. Did Carrillo even graduate from high school?

Of what I've seen, being a Border Patrol Agent today is like going to IRAK with a water pistol, mexican drug lords are sending former mexican military (ZETA)and police personell along with the drug traffickers as protection against US agents, our moronic people in Washington have tied the Border Patrol's hands with virtually no authority, infact two agents are now in prison for trying to stop a mexican drug dealer that was shot at who was given immunity by our own stupid government.Bush,Kennedy and all the boneheads in Washington have made the Border Patrol agency a joke and in the process made our southern border as porous as swiss cheese
