This is the same problem I faced with my little Jack Russell Terrier. The only way to teach your dog to sit is to catch them in the act when it sits naturally and mark that behavior. To mark the behavior you're going to need a clicker. You can find a clicker at Petsmart or other pet stores. When you find them, dont get those really expensive ones. Get the cheapest one you can find because the more expensive ones are a waste of money and they aren't that good. When you see your dog sitting down, click the clicker, say good sit, and give your dog a treat. Repeat this over and over and eventually your dog will learn sit. Also very important, DO NOT PUSH DOWN ON YOUR DOGS BEHIND, EVEN IF IT IS GENTLE! I have seen too many dogs get injured like this so PLEASE DONT DO IT!

Get a treat in hand, with the dog standing infront of you raise the treat slowly over his nose towards the top of his head, he will automatically follow it and will sit as he tries to get the treat.
The moment he puts his bum on the floor say "sit", that is the crucial part. Give him the treat. He will be doing it in a matter of minutes. Dogs learn really quickly where there is food invloved. But never force him to sit by pressing on the back end as this can injure the hind legs

first of all don't let the pup see the treat. Gently push on the pups back end while saying sit then when the pup sits even with your help give the pup part of a treat not a whole treat because you will need to do this over and over til the pup gets used to the word sit. After awhile you will be able to say sit and not help your pup with a little push on its backside then it will get to the point that you won't even have to give your pup a treat and he will be happy just to please you. what ever you do just be patient and don't get angry with your pup for not doing what is expected right away. I quaranty this will work as i have trained many dogs of my own. One of the most important things is that your pup trusts you.

You should sit him yourself. When you say sit, put your hand on his lower back and sit him yourself. Repeat it many times. Then give him the treat. Hope I could help!
