Have you had a proper sleep study at a sleep clinic to rule out sleep apnea or other physical problems?
The problem with sleep tablets is that if you become dependent on them they have the opposite effect than you want: you'll be unable to sleep without them at all, and even worse, you'll need more and more of them to put you to sleep the longer you take them. Obviously this can spiral out of control and put you in a worse situation than you started with.
Some doctors are more helpful than others, though. My best suggestion is to ask for a referral to a doctor who specializes in sleep disorders rather than trying to fight with your regular doctor about it.

The chemist will have something of less strenght than your doctor can prescribe that will help you nod off.
Exercise & hard work is always a good way to work up a good nights deep sleep. Yet some people still have problems.
If you feel you have stress in your life try not to dwell on the issues when you go to bed - I know thats a hard one!
Also don't drink stimulates before bed coffee & the likes & if you think you'll have to get up for a drink through the night, just put some water beside your bed. Otherwise when you get up, it gets your metabolism, blood pressure & heart rate up, thats why it's harder to fall asleep again.

Once l slept only 2-3hours a night for 3 months.
Got antidepresants and sleeping tablets that would put elefant to sleep.
After using them for further 3months doctor told me to take them every other evening.
L was scared. No sleeping tablets. But when l woke up l felt refreshed and slept through the night.
My teeth were yellow, eyebrows unplucked, legs unshaved. I looked a mess.
My husband was taking care of everything and waited patiently for me to be the one that he knew before.
I sorted myself out after that.
Although it took a lot of time to shed 15kg that l gained during my "hibernation". And l have slept like a baby, ever since. Every night.
l think that you don't need them any more.
Simple way is to think like this:
tonight l'll take a bath, rent a movie, have some treat and after that l'm going to sleep.
And DO NOT worry if after that you can't sleep.
Stay awake as long as are not sleepy.
After couple of nights you should be able.
And talk about how you feel with somebody who you know will LISTEN.

Don't get into using these. But your GP may prescribe a short script of about x10 Zopiclone. (or Zimovane) which are a valium type drug. Therefore (in UK at least) the doctors do not have licence to prescribe these as long term or repeat meds due to them being quite addictive.
In the short term even the 3.5mg work a treat and you will go out like a light for a good zzzzzzzzzz. Sweet dreams !!

I wouldn't try anything you can't get in the chemists, over the counter - so maybe try Kalms, or Nytol? Discuss it with the pharmacist , but these can help with sleep problems. But you really need to sort out the underlying cause - if you feel like your GP is not helping you - CHANGE GP, Sleep is SOO important, EVERYONE would have serious mental health problems if they didn't sleep.
Good luck, and I hope you get some sleep soon

Hello,
Nightol works.
Try getting some Lavender and putting it under your pillow at night. Lavender oil works best or a lavender pillow.
When you inbed try this too its works for alot of people. As your laying there with light out tell each part of your body (in your head) to relax, unwind and rest. Start with you toes and feet. Move up through your body till you get to your head and end with your brain.
Pharmacies stock a cornucopia of various sleep aids available without prescription. Have you tried just going to them and explainning your having trouble sleeping and what would they recommend.

you may have a sleeping problem that sleeping tablets may not help with. If I was you I would find a different Doctor and ask him if it is a possibility if that is the problem and ask him for some sleeping tablets.

have a go at drinking milk before bedtime as this has a chemical in it which enduces sleep. And read a book which relaxes you and takes your mind off things. This always helps me and makes me fall asleep within about 15 minutes!
