My dog, sparky, is going to torn 1 soon. I want to switch his food brand. I know what he is eating now, Purina, isn't a good dog food. Do you have any suggestion on what food I should give him..that sells at petsmart of petco??

I switched my dogs from iams to candaie and there coats look way better and look great. I would also recomend Royal Cannin they have breed specific food. Premium Gold is also very good. The first ingrediant should be meat not meal.

I recommend that a dog owner look at the pet food label. Look at the ingredient list and a meat such as chicken should be listed as the first ingredient. Look at the guaranteed analysis to see that the protein level is at 30% or more. The fat content should be at 18% or more. And if there is a rather wide spectrum of ingredients such as omega fatty acids and Vitamin E, that's good, too. There should be NO FOOD COLORING! If you find a few diets that meet this criteria, and there are quite a few from which to choose, you just might have the confidence that you are feeding the best dog food you can get.

Basically you get what you pay for

My 2 pitbulls are on Royale Canin. They were on Purina Dog and Puppy Chow but werent bulking up like they should have been. We switched their food about 2 months ago and have noticed a BIG difference. Its high in vitamins and minerals essential to a dogs health and dosent have any of the additives that Purina puts in theyre's. I am also a "Future Vet". Just recieved my Vet Assistant diploma 3 weeks ago. Good luck and hope this helps.

You should google the "Whole Dog Journal". They have a list of approved foods that are beneficial to dogs. Whatever you do, don't buy any dog food that you find in grocery stores or Walmart or any place like that. They only sell the cheap stuff that is made with by-products and a ton of corn. Dogs cannot digest corn. Be sure to choose a food with the nutritional value you would want for yourself. Or go to a pet supplies store.

Some examples that are on the Whole Dog Journal's list are:
Canidae
Chicken Soup
Go! Natural
Natural Balance Ultra
Royal Canin
Solid Gold
Innova
Back to Basics

I would recommend that you check out Petsmarts Authority Brand, the ingredients are quality. Just remember when you introduce a food change to your dog please do it gradually. You should start by giving him 1/3 of the new food to 2/3 of the previous food for 5 days, then go to 1/2 new food to 1/2 previous food for another 5 days, then go to 2/3 new food to 1/3 previous food for another 5 days. This should avoid any digestive upset to your dog. Good Luck.

Different dogs like different foods. Some are alergic to certain foods. Usually it's a trial and error method to find one.

When you switch, don't go "cold turkey". Start mixing the new food with the old. 25%/75% for a few days. Then 50/50, 75/25, and 100%. Otherwise, your dog may get the runs. Not good.

Blue Buffalo and Royal Canin are available at most Petsmarts.

They are as close to one of the really good holistic brands as you will find at a chain store.

Blue Buffalo has a unique LifeSource Bits cold formed supplement added and uses grains like rice, barley and oats instead of the more common and often problematic corn. It sounds like a great high quality food.

Royal Canin is also a great brand by all accounts. It has breed specific formulas, the only company that I am aware of that does.

If you can find a small independent shop some of the best brands on the market are Innova, Cannidae, Flint River Ranch, Wysong and Solid Gold. Some aren't that expensive and many use human grade/quality ingredients, no fillers and alternative protein sources like bison, salmon and duck.

My dogs eat Natural Balance. It's not readily found in local stores though - you may have to call one of your local feed stores. It was highly recommended by my trainer, and when I looked online it was the highest recommended dog food that I could find. It has a single source carb and a single source protein, which cuts down on allergies. Mine used to eat the Sweet Potato and Fish, but now they're on Venison and Rice. After about 2 years on a food, I switched it up for them - but still using Natural Balance; just a different carb/protein combo. It's a little more pricey, but hey - they're worth it if they get a better diet.

Good for you for recognizing a change is needed!!

I highly recommend Natural Balance which I believe can be found at PetCo. That is the best overall choice for a healthy, happy dog. I recommend the Sweet Potato and Fish kibble or Duck and Potato kibble. My dogs love both!!

I feed Fromm Gold - the Petsmart here doesn't carry it but some of the feed stores and upper scale pet shops do. Other great foods are Wellness, Cannidae, Eagle Pack or California Natural

I switched my dog from purina to science diet a few months ago and noticed a huge difference in her coat, and overall how she was acting. I would recommend it to anyone, either that or eukanuba, which is a step up from science diet.
