General population is really not where a person charged with a rape crime would generally go. First on intake of all inmates there is (if the jail is doing it right) a procedure called classification of the inmate. Each person brought into a jail or prison is classified by a classification officer.

There are two methods to classify inmates, first is the additive point system and the other is the decision tree.

Classification officers will look into the inmates past convictions, charges, his current charges, felony or misdemeanor, is he/her gay, suicidal, serverity of the crime, past behavior while in jail and other factors. These will help the officer make the decision as to what cell to put the inmate into. A basic cell configuration in a jail would be minimum, medium and maximum security cell. Other cells would be a medical cell, solitary cell, and other cells depending how big the jail or prison is.

Governments have an obligation and a duty to protect these guys even if they have done something that would make most of us feel sick.

For example, If you were to put someone in a cell for instance that had committed a homicide and then had a guy spending a few days for a DUI and put them together. Lets say the guy who is in jail for homicide kills the other inmate serving time for DUI, then you will have a lawsuit by the victims family and your tax dollars go to the victims family to pay for the governments screw up by not correctly classifying the two inmates.

In California, if a rapist, especially if the victim is a minor, the prisoner can request protective custody, and in most cases his request is granted.

The California Penal system consists of thousands of beds that are reserved for child molesters and rapists. If a convict is functioning in general population, more than likely, his sex offense is unknown to the other inmates.

Often times, they try to hide the fact that they are child rapists, and if found out, their safety could be in jeopardy, thus they go into protective custody housing, commonly known as "PC" . T

In most cases unless there is a problem that developes in the unit their placed in, the accused is generally housed with the general population of the jail. IF, the accused is alleged to have committed an aggravated offense and has problems with other pre-trial detainees, they are then placed into protective custody until they either make bond or go to trial.
GOOD BLESS/GOOD LUCK!!

I would think so. Prisons are getting so crowded they do not have many options, and certainly do not offer amenities or creature comforts.
Land of laws and lawyers and the politicians that create new laws so that they appear to be busy is what we have made in this grand experiment.

In Texas they were putting all sex offenders in the same units. I think they still do. They say it cuts down on fights and sexual assaults in prison. I wish they would let then go at each other. I have no compassion for them, my 14yr. old daughter was kidnapped at gun point and sexually assaulted last year. So i wish they would do to each other what they did to my daughter.
