Usually you do have a choice. If you choose a career job that is technical or analytical they cant just send you to the front lines and tell you to shoot people. If they did that, they would be realocating resources in a non-reasonalble way. Do you honestly want a techie protecting a hospital with a rifle or pistol, when he excels and gathering intelligence? Or do you want a nurse or coreman shooting at the enemy while their are guys dying from need of medical attention? The U.S military isnt THAT dumb. Unless you sign up to be a special operations person, you are most likely not going to be operating outside your expertise. The only, and i mean ONLY occasions i can see the U.S military allocating resources like that, is during a world conflict(world war) or the command structure is crumbling. If that happens then you might see techies with rifles, or nurses with camo and assault rifles...
P.S If anyone here is considering going into the military, go in with a college degree. It guarentees that you wont get some @#$$ job that include latrine duty or scrubbing decks. If you do want to be on the front lines join the army(with a degree). At least you will be commanding a squad or something...

When you sign the papers you in all essence sign your life away you go where they send you when they want you there no matter what branch of the military you go into (Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force) chances are good that at any moment you will have to go where they need you hence its called the Service as in service to your country and government
and in a little closer essence to your question Air Force is not just guys flying around in airplanes they do have other jobs to keep the planes up and running you have to have a ground crew to keep the planes from being destroyed while on the ground you need security so those forces need to be where the planes are

Everyones basic job in the military- doesn't mater what the uniform is- is some kind of rifleman.
Navy uses big rifles. Air force uses airplanes- and uses rockets and guns.
I'd also like to remind you that the Air Force was orginally called the "Army Air Force" since they started out as part of the Army.
Bottom line is on the enlistment contract (And I quote, verbatum)
THE NEEDS OF THE MILITARY WILL CONTROL.
The rest of the enlistment contract is just garbage to make people feel good- like if they had rights or something.
The last sentence, in LARGE BLOCK LETTERS just say
THE NEEDS OF THE MILITARY WILL CONTROL.
You are disposible- after all, theres all sorts of high schools and colleges to get people to replace you with

excuse me but that's a really odd question...my son signed up for the air force and one of the MAIN things I asked him before I also signed [he was underage] was ARE you SURE, as you must be aware that going to Iraq is a very high reality.....he knew this and still signed and to be honest anyone in ANY branch that they pick does so with the FULL knowledge that going there or ANY other place where they are needed is part and parcel of their job, that's why they have the words of pledging to defend the country against all enemies foreign and domestic.

It doesn't matter which branch of the Military you are in (Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines), it's never his choice. It's the governments choice when getting deployed. As long as your in any Military Branch, you are there to help serve & protect your country regardless you better be prepared.

Did you think you where joining a country club? You are trained to support and fight in wars, which means you go where they need you and do what they need you to do. I doubt you where complaining when the tax payers where paying for your training, housing, and general wellbeing?
It's just like the first Iraq war a bunch of college kids didn't want to deploy, they wanted the government and tax payer to support them and pay for their new skills but God forbid they go do what they signed up to do to received these benefits.
suck it up and do what you signed up to do.

You join the military, and you could end up doing almost anything, one more reason for people to THINK before they enlist.
