I trained my cat to sit in my lap by holding a shrimp or a piece of tuna in my hand. He could only have it if he ate it in my lap. It took almost a year, but eventually he warmed up. Now he'll jump up every once in awhile and cuddle.

Cats are the most independent creatures in the world, and you can't 'make' a cat do anything. You can try putting your cat on your lap and then feeding it little kibbles or treats. But chances are it will hop off your lap as soon as the treats are done. If you have more than one cat, they socialize with each other and don't need to depend on humans for companionship. If you have only one cat, it will trail you around and insist on being involved with you.

Out of the 4 cats I have, only 1 is a 24/7 all-over-you kind of cuddler. While yes it's wonderful, I have accepted that the other 3 just don't have a lot of interest in hanging out too long. I did notice though that when I completely ignore my cats for about 5-7 days, like, I clean their litter boxes and feed them but no sleeping in my bed or in my room, no petting, no getting their attention by calling their names...they start to be like "Hey, where's our mom?" I seem to get a little more affection out of them when I work this way. Good luck! Let me know how it works out!

I would say that it is impossible to make a "lap cat" out of one that does not WANT to be, a lap cat. The more that you try, the more determined they will be also. None of my cats are lap cats, but I still love them. That is part of the joy of having a cat. You don't own a cat......they own you . Have fun with your cats, I bet they still love you!!!

I feed my kitty every day....clean out the litter box...play with kitty and give her so much attention. Does she ever sit in my lap>? NO NO NO. She likes to sit in hubby's lap and he does none of these things. I think ignoring must work.

Try tempting them with cat treats, they love them, and never take them up when they don't want to.
My cats won't stay much in my arms, but they like to be carressed when they are on their big pillow. Sometimes they stay if they're already half asleap, but not when they're fully awake. One will stay more than another.
Remember, if you don't want them near when they want you (f.e. at night), they surely won't get familiar with you. They're not dogs.

Put food on your lap, and pet them while they eat. It will comfort them, and they will try to do it more often. Don't make them stay, let them come and go, and eventually they will come to you for comfort.
