That quote means that everyone who helps another person is important. It also means that one doesn't have to be famous to be important, that helping other people is just as important.

Think about this... if you're helping someone, then you're definitely not useless. If you're "lightening the burden of another", that means that you're helping someone. A lot of times, people don't recognize the assistants in life, which can lead them to feeling useless, which is the opposite of the truth.

I interpret that as 'a person who helps out his fellow man by "lightening [his] burdens" is not useless'. One would prove an invaluable friend because they help to lighten the load that's on your shoulders. If this is for a paper/english class, you could develop the explanation further to discuss human nature/helping others, etc.
