Overcoming shyness isnt something that can be done overnight but it definitely can be done. A few things that will definitely work:
1) Exercise more---when you feel good about yourself your confidence will grow quickly. Especially when people start complimenting you on how much better you look!
2) Update the wardrobe. Dress a little more shnazzy and you will feel better.
3) Avoid alcohol. Yeah, some people use a drink or two to "lighten up." That's fine but dont let your personality be dependent on having a drink.
4) Got a sense of humor? If so, use it; it's the universal language. Everyone like to laugh.
5) Be realistic. Not everyone can be the social magnet in the room. Know and accept your limits. Some people dont like being the center of attention. There is nothing at all wrong with that.
6) Dont avoid social situations because you are shy. The more you are involved the easier it will become.
7) Smile! People find it easier to connect with a happy person.

If you're at a party and want to really get into it I suggest having a drink! Alcohol brings out the shyest of people but don't overdo it!
Get a not-so-shy friend to introduce you properly to a few people. Ask him/her to stay with you for a while whilst the conversation gets going, then when they think your ok on your own let them go.
That way you'll get used to talking to new people and eventually your confidence will get better.
Hope I've been helpful.

Sometimes I know that can be very hard to do but you have to at some point, you have to first love yourself and even practise at home in the mirror how and what to say when you are in public and if that doesn't work maybe you are hanging with the wrong crowd. But don't give up these things take time.

I used to have the same problem. I found that the best way to deal with it is to follow my own pursuits, and accomplish them to the best of my ability. When people see this in you, you won't have to worry about shyness because they'll see you as you really are, which goes a long way.

Let me tell you something I was the same way and very shy all the time. And it takes alot to boost your confidence, I know it took me a while to. You just have to keep telling yourself that you can do it and theres nothing to be scared of.
