There are several reasons. People created the idea of god to explain the unknown. If lighting struck, or a storm was created, they were curious as to why. The people that created the idea of god were primitive people. They lacked the mental capability to actually explain and figure these things out for real. As I said, these were primitive people. Their lives consisted of getting up, getting water, hunting, bringing food back, breeding, and sleeping. They did not have the time to think about things. But they were still curious. To allow themselves to continue with primitive, basic survival, they just said "a supernatural force (god) did it". Believing in god is an excuse to not think.
There was another reason. People were scared of lightning, storms, etc. They needed comfort. So they created god(s) so that they could worship and please them. If they sacrificed an animal to the god of weather, he would end a drought and bring rain. It gave them a sense of control. This did not work, but they convinced themselves it did, much the way people today convince themselves anything is a miracle to validate their beliefs.
People then began to grow grains. This lead to a surplus of resources, and commercial trade. This was the beginning of civilization. People then didn't have to try to survive all of the time. They had time to think. Curiosity took over. Curiosity is a survival mechanism. If you are curious, you try different berries in the forest for example, and diversify your food sources, so if one is gone, you have others. Now with people out of a "just trying to survive" situation, their curiosity could be turned to other things. But people had conditioned themselves to believe in god.
After that, people became a little smarter and realized that they could use religion to control people. Holy men would eat mind altering plants and have hallucinations. People thought they were talking to the gods, so they listened to the holy men. This eventually lead to more complex means of control through religion, like threat of hell if you don't listen to the church, and reward of heaven if you do.
People today still use god as an excuse to not think, and most who believe in god are a result of the people who conditioned themselves to believe, and them did the same to their children. With the influence of the church, the illusion was passed from generation to generation. Some people are looking for comfort, some for explanations that are simpler than the truth, and some are following their parents, but they turn to a belief in god, and religion.

People have been creating gods for centuries to explain natural phenomena that were previously beyond our grasp. Why the sun rises/sets, where we came from, why we should be good people... etc. Now we have the capability to understand those questions, but people are still unwilling or unable to let go of the belief in god.

To try and explain all the problems and things that are wrong with the world, especially those that we do not understand. If something is horrifically wrong, the existence of God allows them to just say "It is the will of God" or shrug their shoulders and say "You move in mysterious ways O Lord" rather than just crawl into a ball and cry.

To give humans a purpose in life and to soothe fears about death by creating an afterlife. It was also a way to gloss over ignorance while remaining relatively simple.

We didn't Create God!!!
We (THE Native American)
have Wakan Tanka ------ The Creator!!!
Here's Why!!!
Each morning upon rising, and each evening before sleeping, gives thanks for the life within you and for all life, for the good things the Creator has given you and for the opportunity to grow a little more each day. Consider your thoughts and actions of the past day and seek for the courage and strength to be a better person. Seek for the things that will benefit others (everyone).
2. Respect. Respect means "To feel or show honor or esteem for someone or something; to consider the well being of, or to treat someone or something with deference or courtesy". Showing respect is a basic law of life.
3. Once a council has decided something in unity, respect demands that no one speak secretly against what has been decided. If the council has made an error, that error will become apparent to everyone in its own time.
4. Be truthful at all times, and under all conditions.
5. Always treat your guests with honor and consideration. Give of your best food, your best blankets, the best part of your house, and your best service to your guests.
6. The hurt of one is the hurt of all; the honor of one is the honor of all.
7. Receive strangers and outsiders with a loving heart and as members of the human family.
8. All the races and tribes in the world are like the different colored flowers of one meadow. All are beautiful. As children of the Creator they must all be respected.
9. To serve others, to be of some use to family, community, nation, and the world is one of the main purposes for which human beings have been created. Do not fill yourself with your own affairs and forget you’re most important talks. True happiness comes only to those who dedicate their lives to the service of others.
10. Observe moderation and balance in all things.
11. Know those things that lead to your well-being and those things that lead to your destruction.
12. Listen to and follow the guidance given to your heart. Expect guidance to come in many forms; in prayer, in dreams, in times of quiet solitude, and in the words and deeds of wise Elders and friends.
Wahoo!!!

In olden days, when survival depended on the rains and the crops, people grasped at any straw, rational or not, to try to improve the odds. If the rains came, one's prayer worked; if it didn't rain, one did not pray hard enough, or often enough, or use the right words, or ... (fill in the blank). In this sort of heads I win, tails you lose situation, religion is quite understandable. For much more on this, see:
