Most of the above answers are very helpful in terms of soothing and resting your voice to recover from the strain.
I just want to point out to you how crucial it is to warm your voice up appropriately BEFORE you sing. It is every bit as important as preventing a sports injury by stretching the muscles and warming up before a game or event.
Just a couple of scales is not adequate. Your warm-up should be just as vigorous as if you are getting ready for a marathon. Start slow with breathing excercises and build up to vocalization on the breath, then some sustained notes. Spend at least 1/2 an hour on your warm-up before singing and avoid milk and dairy products. Breath support is incredibly important and if noone has taught that to you yet I would suggest spending a lesson entirely focusing on breathing. Also, I really think the body is very important for singing. Your posture should be neutral and strong, and yoga beforehand (or yoga in general to work on posture and breathing) is an immense help.

As much as this is hard to believe but singing is actually the most un-natural thing a person can do.I have been singing professionaly in a band for over 10 years and have travelled from one end of canada to the other playing big venues..If you have a sore throat from singing probably because you are doing it wrong..you need to sing pushing the air out from your gut and not your lungs..the difference will be singing and not yellling..go to your local pharmacy and get these small pellets called "meloids" they are tinny pellets you can suck on before you sing and belive me they will help..and also it would be good for you to see a vocal coach before you cause permanent damage or end up with nodes on your vocal cords..Please do yourself a favor and stay away from Halls or any other cough drops because they are high in sugar and other stuff .and all they do is cause flem ..the way halls work is by removing a thin layer of skin from your throat so you feel better but singing with a fresh layer of sking will be nice but it won't last long and you'll end up with loosing your voice for a few days and causing damage..

Maybe you are straining your voice by singing too loudly or maybe hitting too high of a note. To relieve a sore throat, mix about 1/2 teaspoon of salt in a fairly warm cup of water and gargle for 3 minutes, or until complete relief is felt. Happy singing and happy gargling....glugghg....glugghhg....

Ron C is absolutely right. Singing from your diaphram takes practice but you will be amazed with the result: hitting notes higher and holding them longer. Plus, you will not tax your throat.
Think of your voice like any other instrument. You wouldn't play the flute with your feet, so why sing with your throat?

Your probably straining your voice. Start slowly. Don't try to be the next american idol in your first pratices. Make sure you are comfortable hitting the notes you are singing, because singing too high or low can cause that also. and always warm up to sing those high and low notes, if you have to.

You are probably singing too hard. That's what happens to me. Sometimes, I sing too loud, too hard, or too high, and my throat and my head starts to hurt. So every time you sing, get water or a mixture of room temperature water and salt if available. Also, cool down for a while.

You probably just aren't breathing correctly, or if you've been singing incorrectly for a while it could be nodes or a polyp.I would get it checked out if that's the case.

It may just be that the air passing through your vocal cords is drying out your throat, or it is all inside your head.

Just don't strain yourself too much.
Drink some warm tea with lemon and honey or mint.
I did this last year and it really helped.
