My son is no longer going to his Air Force Reserve weekends and I wonder what the ramifications are. Does this show up on a credit report? Things like that.

Since this is war, your Son could be shot for treason.

Right now, if what youv'e said is true, he could be charged with desertion, and spend the rest of his enlistment in Federal Prison.

You grab your Son, hold him down, have him read this, and then you drive his goat smelling carcus to the Air Forces JAG office.

He has a fair chance of being dishonarbly discharged, maybe some jail time- 90 days to 6 months.

On the other hand, he may be able to redeem himself if he's got a darn good reason for missing "Drill"- he'd better have an honest talk with his CO right now

Okay, some people are being really dramatic here. No one is going to shoot your son, and they won't arrest him either.

However, he needs to get his sorry butt to his drills and do his duty. That's the only right and honorable thing to do, and you should be ashamed of yourself as a mother if you're tolerating his cowardice.

The biggest penalty is that he can end up with a Bad Conduct discharge, which will follow him for the rest of his life. He will have to tell prospective employers that he's been in the military, and they will want to know the characterization of his service. If he omits that he served, or lies about his discharge, he can be fired.

So if I were him, I'd really think twice about walking away.

He can be nailed for going AWOL and be Dishonorably Discharged which is not something that he wants on his record....To be honest he should have not signed his name in the first place it is called the Service for a reason its being in service to the country whether you disagree with what the policy is or not

he will eb labled a deserter after being gone for 30 days. teh next time he gets pulled over for a traffic violation, or he tries to get a federalloan, his Social secuirty number will pop up as flagged, and he could face immediate imprisonment by local authorites until the military decides to come get him.

If he wants out, there are better ways to do it, especially since the AF is overmanned and are wanting to let people go who don;lt want to be there.

Then he should of never signed up. While he's off having fun on those weekends there are other mothers loved ones who are risking their lives fighting for his freedoms some are dying. I personally think he's a coward and a disgrace and needs to grow up.

He needs to fill out some forms to be IRR (non drilling reservist). His unit admin will have these, I suggest he go there on a weekday to avoid getting harassed by many of his fellow reservists. He will be able to avoid drilling, but he will be required to go with the unit if they get activated till his contract expires.

Its called Absent WithOut Leave (AWOL). Its against military regulations and he can be punished and court marshaled for it. You don't get to sign up and then pick and choose what you support or which orders to follow.
