It depends on what you snack on. Some foods like complex carbs help you sleep better. Snacking on proteins, sugars or junk isn't such a good idea.

I know from my own experiences that I have totally cut out eating anything from a range of about 2-4 hours before I go to bed and it helped me tone-up (that and going to the gym and no soda/fast food) I have heard from many of the trainers at my gym that when you eat 4 hours before you go to sleep you body can't burn it off because of the resting state. But a snack probably won't hurt as much as like a Meal!

If you do snack an hour before bed on a regular basis the calories will catch up to you and you will gain lots of weight.

I dont really think it does HARM to you, its just that while sleeping, and a little bit prior to falling asleep, your metabolism slows down dramatically. Thats why they say to not eat after like 8 pm if you are trying to maintain or lose your weight So if you eat before bed, your body cannot process and break down the food adequately.

It's like necessary for me. I've got a nuclear fusion reactor for metabolism. A coke and a honey bun and I sleep like a baby.
