Yes....the only color that will make a room look bigger is pure white...you're absolutely right. Another thing is lots of natural lighting. If you have a lot of windows, make sure that they aren't blocked by something. If you have only a few windows, bring in a lot of lamps with bright white light. It will definitely help! Make sure your room is not cluttered. If it's more organized, it will look neat, not to mention much bigger! Buy some storage bins at kmart or Marshalls and organize them neatly in your room. Also go UP. Floor to ceiling shelving is a great way to go!

The trick to light colors is the placement. Paint 3 walls your first light hue. Paint the 4th wall and the ceiling your 2cd hue. Or paint stipes on the furthest wall with both colors to create an upward feel. Use all rectangular objects such as mirrors, picture frames.sconces...think tall when buying. If you find a wide piece you like look at it and see if you can use it vertically! That way you don't limit yourself.
Drapes and sheers should be hung above the window caseing to create the look of tallness. Sheers that are light and airy will add to this effect. Don't puddle the drapes at the floor unless the elegant look is what you are after they should hang about 1/2 inch from the floor. Keep all accessories light, drape a throw at an angle on furniture not just squared off. Use pillows in light fabric sparingly. Too much in the room will make it seem smaller.
Lighting, lighting, lighting as well. Light all corners, use lamps and uplights.
Think UP-LIGHT-AIRY and follow through... if you do have say things like a favorite short and square box you want to display add height to it by putting it up on say books, just thing vertical.
Hope this helps!

Paint the ceiling either white or a lighter version of the wall color.
You can also paint the back wall of the room a lighter shade than the rest of the walls. It'll give depth to the room.

Use a large mirror on one wall...it helps alot! Make sure you have something to bounce the reflection (i.e. candles on the other wall)...
Paint a "darker" shade on the bottom 3/4's of a wall...and a lighter section on the upper 1/4
Be sure to keep the ceiling light!

Anything vertical to the view makes an object look smaller and horizental objects and lines make it look larger. You can widen drapes or curtains on a window as an example to make it seem larger.

mirrors
be sure to included some verticle lines, not just horizontal lines. Verticle lines represent strength and power. Make sure verticle lines are in your focal point.
Verticle lines can be created with tall plants, a tall mirror, stripes on the wall, etc.

Hang draperies higher than you would normally. Smaller furniture, less cluter, mix glass in to open a room. Mirrors work.
