Calorie-wise, it does not make a difference.

The food in your stomach does not get used for energy. It gets "processed," meaning the nutrients are removed and the rest leaves the body.

Some of those nutrients (mainly carbohydrates) are stored as glycogen, which the body uses for energy.

This process does not happen overnight.

Comfortwise, whatever works for you.

Its best to have a small snack before jumping on a treadmill. Maybe something with 100-200 calories (yogurt+fruit, clif bar, etc). Then have a meal afterwards.

If you have a big meal before, then your body will be busy trying to digest while also exercising. But also, if you workout while starving, you won't be at your best on the treadmill.

If you're doing this to lose weight, try counting your calories and have a smaller dinner if you are also having a snack beforehand. Working out will increase your metabolism for a few hours so you're bound to win regardless of how you break up your eating routine.

Its better to work out when you have your peak energy in the day. Do not work out within an hour either side of eating a meal.
