I'm from Pittsburgh, and it's always been Car-nay'-gee. Andrew Carnegie was from a Scottish family and supposedly pronounced it Car-nay-gee, but now I wonder. Living away from home, many people pronounce the name car'-ni-gee. Is this all dependent on a regional dialect?

I've always pronounced it as Car-na-gie
and when I checked the Merriam-Webster, they pronounced it the same way. I think a lot of us pronounce words the way we heard them when we were young..... so whether they're technically right or wrong, really doesn't matter, if that's the way *it is* for us.

Main Entry: Car·ne·gie
Pronunciation: kär-'ne-gE, 'kär-n&-gE
Function: biographical name
Andrew 1835-1919 American (Scottish-born) industrialist & philanthropist

Well, in all reality there is no correct pronunciation of any word. It all depends on your up bringing and where you're from. I wouldn't say that it's a regional dialect so much as where your parents are from and what type of television you may watch. I pronounce it car'-ni-gee.
