You need to create a separate partition for Windows 98(It needs to be FAT, not NTFS). You then put in the 98 install disk, tell it what drive/partition to use that's pretty much it.
***While you're making partitions, make an extra one so you can install linux. It's safer, faster, way more secure, more functional, and 100% FREE!!!

Is this a piece of software?
If so then run the Windows Compatability Wizard.
Click Start, then All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools to find it if you are having any problems.
Are you trying to install windows 98 to run as an OS? Why? I can see the point of Linux but not an older version of the same OS.

I assume you mean how can you get win 98 running next to windows XP. Basically you have to partition your hard disk and install 1 OS to one part, and the other OS to the other part. You can choose which to boot on start up of the computer.

partiton the drive,
you can do this by booting into the windows xp disc and on the format drive option press "d" to delete partition and then "c" to create partion and choose say half the size of your hardisc then press "c"again and create another partition in the rest of the space. press "ctrl, alt and delete" to restart the computer and then:-
install windows 98 and choose to install it on partiton 1
install xp install on partition 2
bingo you have a multi boot system
preferably it is better to use 2 physical drives rather than partioning one single drive, but it will work fine like this.
this is true of any OS ;)
hope this helps

Windows Xp is backwards compatible with older programs, meaning that CD should work just fine. Chow

yes, windows 98 is still a good operating system for playing games on,it was the best windows version for gaming really
what you need to do to install windows 98 on your p.c is either 1)format your hard drive and then create a partition using the windows 98 start up disk which you will need for the 98 installation(you can get this from http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm)
or i reckon the easiset way to dual boot with windows 98 is to add a 2nd hard drive, you can pick up a 80gb udma hard for less than £30(http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=78788)and then add it as a slave drive,to do this just look on the drive itself and check the configuration for slave and then set the jumper setting
when dual booting you need to install the oldest windows first,so put the floppy start up disk into the p.c,and make sure your bios boot setting is set to floppy disk first(press delete at start up and then go into advanced bios settings)remember to save and exit set up after setting boot order, you need to do the same with windows xp but set the boot order to cd-rom first instead
then after inserting the floppy start up disk and choosing set up with cd-rom support, when the command line a:\ appears you need to change the a:\ to your cd/dvd-rom drive letter, windows will let you know this after the floppy set up disk has loaded, usually e:\
so to install windows 98 type e:\ win98se/setup.exe
then press return
note:before installing 98 you need to delete the ntfs file system structure,so to do this type in fdisk after the start up disk has loaded and then say yes to large disk support
you then need to delete the non-dos partition, say yes to everything, then once its deleted you need set partiiton active, then once this has been done you need to restart the p.c and then format the drive, once this is done you may install windows 98
the installation is pretty straightforward, then once you have finished installing 98 the go back into bios and set boot to cd-rom and install xp,luckily xp can format itself and change file system, you could install xp under fat32 file system so its the same as 98,but you are allowed to have two different file systems on the same p.c,as long as they are divided by a partiiton or a seperate hard drive
what you will notice when xp is installing is it creates a boot manager, were xp will be seen as xp home/pro and 98 will become "ealier version of windows"or something similar
things to remeber when dual booting
a)you need to install seperate anti-virus and other security software, they wont conflict as they are in seperate operating systems
b)you need seperate drivers(display,audio,router)
c)allways install the oldest o/s first, dual booting works with any version of windows back as far as windows 98
-----------------------------------------------------------------
it is possible to trio boot(3 o/s) or quad boot(4 o/s),again you install the oldest first and then each newer os after,i have done 3 o.s (98,me,xp) and it worked fine, its just a pain to update
any problems let me know
good luck mate

computers in general tend to be backwards compatable. odds are you can run it but this might not work. just put in the disc drive. if nothing happens go to my computer and find the disc drive. you shouldtn have a problem.
