There is even no need to marry when two people are sure that they wanna live together but the society needs it. Engagement is a part of the process. And in my native culture we have some other ritual where the bride and the groom are seperately decorated with yellow flowers and turmeric. These are all socializations where the two does marry not only for themselves but also to make others happy about the whole affair.

An engagement is annoucing to the world that the couple intends to be married. My best friend has been with her boyfriend since sophomore year of high school (years) and they're planning on getting married. They aren't engaged, though; there has been no formal 'will you marry me?' and no ring--they're not at a point in their lives where they can say "We are financially and mentally ready enough to establish a household together", as they haven't completed their education and are not sure exactly where life may take them yet.

Engaged implies that a wedding is being planned and the couple has at least an idea of when the wedding is going to happen.
