Brainwashed by parents.. Ummm I must be one of the stupid ones because my mother never used the name of God in her life for anything but a swear word and my dad was gone before I went to 1st grade. Still I was able to finish college even though I am stupid. Still I have been able to build my career to become a valued member of a large data security management team in a very large data network. I guess I'm am just lucky no way I could have earned my place being so stupid... Jim

and I would consider you an idiot for throwing garbage like that.
To insinuate religious people dumb is proof of your ignorance and stupidity based on faulty thinking. And I am far from brainwashed from my parents, since I have seen my dad once in over 40 years. My mother is Catholic and I do not follow their doctrine. My decision to follow Christ came when I was 27 and moved out LONG before then.
I also hold an degree in electronics with honors.
As for you, I guess what is the use of having ignorance if you can't show it.

Why do we have to be considered "brainwashed"?
I am perfectly happy with the life I have. I am a Christian and proud of it. Even though some may not believe in what I believe in, think that my beliefs are stupid and made up by men to control others, or whatever else people think about my religion, the fact is, it is what I want. It is my decision to make, not anything that was driven into my head or anything that anyone used to "brainwash" me.
Is it so hard for those who don't believe, to understand that "religious" people, want to believe and have faith in their religion, and don't necessarily have to be brainwashed to do so?

I consider religious people loved by the Lord. Especially ones that obey the Lord and have faith in the one and only true Lord.
Parents always have first influence on their children on every issue of their family life. Religion, music, politics, sports, art, etc. As we grow up and gain independence and learn more about the world and our surroundings, we freely choose if we want to try other things or stay with what we already now. This is our right as a human being and as an adult. I was raised in the Catholic faith and went to Cathoic school for 8 yrs. I flunked religion class for 2 semesters because I refused to read the Bible and I was always playing devil's advocate. I questioned my faith for a long time and had doubts, even more so when I started to read about other religions. I never stopped believing that God existed, I knew that in my heart. But I didn't like people telling me what I had to do to get to Heaven and such. I don't trust humans and having trust in their words about my afterlife didn't settle well with me. I literally told God to go to hell. I left Him alone for 15 yrs. After not dying from a suicide attempt (the doctors had no medically reason why I survived it) I started to pray to God for the first time in 15 yrs. Now I consider myself reborn in the Catholic faith and it's all by my own choose and free-will. No one brainwashed me and I am definitely not dumb!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Being faithful to God isn't a fault, it's a priviledge. I'm 36 yrs old and went back to God 3 yrs ago. I love my life and I love God!!! He has saved me from myself. Which proves my point once again, I can't trust humans. I only trust in the Lord!

I consider most of them unwitting tools. It s all nice to believe in a good thing but historically religion is a death cult. Arrogant people - brainwashed arrogant people with a god complex. On the other hand lets not forget what some teachers do to children in some schools too. But I put most the blame on william ayers and his proteges. On another note you wouldn t believe the death cults in the hospitals either. America is sick but no one notices because we are not suppose to tell ont he cults. Actually the cults are just tools anyway but if your that stupid.. meh. I guess America likes their little fake Bible plays. I love America but stuff is out of hand here. Corruption needs routed out from the dog catcher up. Its that bad. B I B L E = Brainwashed idiots believing lies.

It depends on how religious the person is. If they're the religious extremist, then yes, I do consider them to be rather unintelligent (evolution being a myth; creationism; etc.). But most people are only religious because their parents are, not because they're stupid. The general cycle:
Parents tell child that God exists. Child believes without question, because that is what children are told to do (adults/parents know more than a child, and the child is taught never to question an adult's knowledge). No adult introduces any doubt in the child's mind, so the blind faith continues. The child grows up as an adult with blind faith. The adult then has children of his/her own, and instills the blind faith onto them. The cycle continues.
But, the less religious the parents, the less religious the children, and they lack the kind of blind faith that children of very religious parents have. This lack of blind faith then allows for the child to question his/her faith, and the child can then change his/her religion (or perhaps strip him/herself of it altogether).
So, most of the time I consider religious people to be religious only because their parents are/were. In some cases these religious people are rather simple, but it's not like all religious people are.

If Christians are brainwashed, then how do you explain those who come to Christ as adults but were raised as Wiccans or Atheists etc?
Perhaps it isn't the religious people who've been brainwashed by their parents but people such as yourself who've been brainwashed by scientists (many of whose studies have since been proven fundamentally flawed) and brainwashed by schools and professors.
It's good to know that you consider some of the most brilliant minds of our day "dumb" and/or "brainwashed."

Neither. I'm not dumb, though my best subject isn't science. My parents didn't brainwash me. I was raised in religion, but I walked away from it, for twelve years. My mother (my only surviving parent) was open-minded enough to allow me to find my own way.
And I did.
Have some respect. People are entitled to believe whatever they want.

No no no. Only half of Christians are those brainwashed by their parents. The other half converted because they were looking for something and this is what they found.

Brainwashed, mostly. Many people lack the intellectual horsepower or the time to figure out for themselves the way the world really works, which is a shame: it results in the waste of an enormous amount of time, money, and all too frequently, human life (think 9/11). See reference for much more on this.
