What is a relaxed town in Italy I can buy an old ruined house? I like hilly places with cobbled streets and old buildings. Like breezy weather and prefer it not to be too hot to cycle. Looking for Malibu / Manhattan beach (20 years ago) type place with girls, no police sirens and reasonable property prices. If it is within 3.5 hours by train to a major city that would be better as this is a permanent move and I work as an Oracle contractor.

I'm sure of that: my region Marche, near Adriatic coast, central Italy!
Lovely mild hills and a lot of old ruined country houses you can buy and pay less than you can imagine. If you want to buy new or renewed houses, prices are a little bit much expensive.
Have a look here and let me know if you like it:

don't worry at all...italy is a very small country, and 3hours by train to a major city is really the maximum you can get.
i'd suggest you to take a look in Tuscany (the region of Florence), in the southern part (just to let you see, the places where roberto benigni played "life is beautiful"). it should be around the city of Arezzo. many foreign people are coming to italy to buy property in that area. it's very calm, peaceful.
otherwise you can take a look in liguria, both Riviera di Levante and Riviera di Ponente. it's the region where is Genova, and by the way it's not so far from Turin.
