I don't think NYC has a proportionately larger rat problem than most other large cities. Given its vertical density vs other cities in its size category, that's an accomplishment. There are compartively few tall buildings in London or Paris, for example.

Bottom line. Lots of people and lots of garbage. NYC is the most densely populated city in the US with 8.1 million across the 5 boroughs and over 2 million on the island of Manhattan. I agree with the other person about the water because that is a contributing factor, but the bottom line is there is a lot of garbage generated and rats are scavengers. I live on the east side of midtown and don't see rats real often, but they are there and they are a fact of life in big cities. Usually you'll see them in the subways, but you also see them at night among the garbage bags on the street or in the parks.

Rats like moisture. Since Manhattan, and the remaining boroughs are surrounded by water, it attracts rats. For example, many of the NYC rats live in the sewer system. Reason because there is water in the sewers and it gives off moisture. As far as other cities, I've seen rats in San Francisco in broad daylight on a major street. Never seen that in NYC. Only seen rats in the NYC subway system during daylight hours.
