No, it's not really a nice thing for kids to say. It's your job, as mother, to see to it they are raised with manners, no matter what anyone else thinks.

I think it comes down to why is your kid telling another kid to shut up? If the other kid is being rude to him or to someone else that your kid might be talking to then there isn't a problem with your ki telling the other kid to shut up. But if your kid is doing it just because he/she doesn't want to hear the other kid talk then yes it is rude and you should tell your kid to shut up.

The schools here in Fla now state that it is a rude expression and can not be used when adults are talking to children. It is my opinion that too many words which used to mean one thing now mean something bad - I am 57 and since my childhood: Gay used to mean happy, hot meant it would burn you, the bomb was something usa dropped on japan, booty was something a pirate had, a train was something that ran on tracks, crack was a split in wood, ice was something you put in tea to make it cooler - I think you get my point - Now shut up already!!

It's fine if you think it's not okay, it's actually kind of rude, but remember even if you don't let your kid say it in the house he'll probably say it at school.

I think it's very rude. It's not very polite like you are saying. Your family member probably should watch how he/she speaks, for one of these days he/she might say it to the wrong person.

Anyone who says shut up is being rude. I don't like it when kids say it or when adults say it. It really bothers me when an adult says it to a kid.

it is rude and shouldn't be encouraged among children. When they say shut up tell them that's not nice and suggest that they say be quiet please or something nicer like that. My little neice who is 4 now always tells me "thats bad!!!" or "dont say that!!!" every time I say shut up around her hehe.
