You want to ruin my week? It's Monday morning and the last thing I want to contemplate is the horror of school dinners. The worst was when we got fish pie on Thursday. We knew it was because the fish was going off and wouldn't last til Friday. We then got cheese pie on Friday.
Two puds stick in my memory just as they stuck in my throat during my school days: the first we christened 'dead man's leg, it was a baked jam roll, with the jam oozing out all over where the pastry had split; the second we christened 'Shap granite' (this was in the southern Lake District) - I think it might have been a sort of shortbread, but it was so hard that if you refused to try to soften it with lumpy custard, it would shoot across the dining room when you attacked it. I had visions of being accused of manslaughter after a fragment had penetrated the skull of some totally innocent fellow pupil.

Definately the Chicken Fricassee - god that was gorgeous. For pudding I loved the sponge dome thing that was covered in jam and coconut with loads of custard over it. My two children don't get anything like that now at their school !!

I loved school sausages, the cheese and onion flan and Meat and Potato pie. And for afters rice pud and jam [a table of 8 had to share a tiny saucer of jam, tight gits], and cornflake tart and custard.

I was lucky enough to have a mummy who was also a school cook, so I got school dinners at home too!
My absolute favourite was cheese and egg flan with roat potatoes and beans and chocolate concrete and pink custard. She still makes the flan and choc concrete whenever i go home now!!

All I can remember was that EVERY day we got lumpy mash and spring greens.
Sausages with it, liver with it, everything with it. yuk.
I used to like the chocolate concrete pudding with mint custard though.

Edit: I just remembered, my mum always knew when we'd had sausages for dinner (we didn't get a choice) 'cos I would spend the whole night throwing up!

Mine was turkey pie and gravy, then chocolate sponge with mint custard. I hated most school dinners though! But that one was yummy!

Mine was chips and gravy and those hard chocolate cake things never new what they were called! Those were the days when schools couldn't get sued for the quality of food! :)
