I am looking at a used saddle that I might buy. I rode in it today, and it is so comfortable.
The only problem is that it has some minor cracking above the knee pads. Is it possible for these cracks to be repaired by a saddle repair shop? I am going to use the saddle for showing.
The rest of the leather is in good condition. It is a very good price, and an expensive brand name. I couldn't find anything on the internet about fixing these cracks, only how to prevent them.
Thanks!

Ps. I asked this in the general pets section, but I think more people will see it here.

Check this site out it tells you all about saddle care, and you can click on a link to ask the repair man a question. http://duckriver.ponyclub.org/TackCareRepair.html

Go to this site it will tell you how to fix those cracks good luck, but I would still ask the repairman on the previous site to be 100 %

No the cracks are not repairable. They are caused by not treating the leather. Cracks happen when leather gets dry and hard. The cracks usually are found where the leather bends constantly with use. The cracks are usually just surface. If they go deeper, like say to the middle of the leather they will eventually break away at that point. If the cracks are just on the surface the leather is still strong and can be prevented from going further by treating the leather. There are many products out there to do this. You say knee pads. That sounds like the fenders. None the less if the tree is solid.( the form the saddle is built around) and the rest of the saddle is in good condition it may be a worth while buy. Provideing they are not asking too much for a used saddle. Should you buy it. Clean it up with saddle soap. Then find a leather treatment to bring back the life of the leather. This will prevent more cracks from occuring. A saddle used properly and treated periodicly should last you a lifetime...

It can be worked on. The leather that is cracking will split. Oils and other lubricants will delay it, for a time.
I suggest that you look for an Upholsterer or an upholstery shop.
If it is in panels it can be replaced, but then you will have brand new leather and older broken in leather, a good Upholster can sand it or scuff it to match or may have some in stock that matches it. Any shop will be most happy to effect or replace the damaged hide.
Upholstery is an Apprenticeship Skill that very few have complete knowledge of. Some are Cloth Textiles only, some are Cloth.Vinyl, others are Cloth,Manufactured,Auto,Marine,Shoes,Saddles, and items that are unique to the Craftsman or Apprentice that is working on it.
If there is a shop in your town that repairs seats in Lincolns,Cadies,BMWs, and others, they can most likely do the work.
Like all crafts and trades, get references and ask around about them.
Happy Riding!
