With the number of irregular troops and militia units involved, especially in the border states and the territories, along with the sub-standard to non-existent records-keeping on both sides, especially that of the Confederacy, I doubt that ANY figures of dead and/or wounded, especially the count of amputees were anywhere close in accuracy. Doubtless though, with the massive destructiveness of the weapons utilized and the sub-standard and primitive quality of the medical care available, the numbers of amputations caused by wounds and poor aftercare must have been in the thousands.
The great general "Stonewall" Jackson himself died from complications of a wound and the improper care of the following amputation.
With the massive number of casualties created in these horrible battles, and the lack of adequate medical facilities, personnel, and supplies, amputation, instead of proper care was so common as to border on the criminal.
I can relate to the hardships these brave men on both sides must have faced, being an amputee myself, albeit not from as horrible circumstances.

I have read a lot of books on the Civil War,but i can't remember any figures. there were an awful lot though. I read where at times the arms & legs were piled high out side of the operation tents. your library should have a book on facts&figures on that Good Question .
