Overview: This is a naturally well-behaved breed making him the perfect household pet. The Basset Hound is very gentle, sweet, and loving. This breed is prone to howling and barking so he makes a good alarm dog, but is much too gentle to be a guard dog.
Character: The long ears of this rather lazy breed are sensitive, which makes him best for a life with older and more respectable children. The Basset Hound has the tendency to be stubborn, but never timid. Should never display signs of aggression, as this is a naturally fun loving and gentle dog.
Temperament: Affectionate, lazy, devoted, quiet, and peaceful, the Basset Hound does exceptionally well with a family. This breed loves children, and generally does well with other animals. They can be taught tricks, but tend to be stubborn so patience is key.
Care: Combing and brushing with a firm bristle brush should keep shedding to a minimum as this breed sheds constantly. Toenails should be trimmed regularly as this breed is lazy which can neglect the nails. Cleaning under the folds of skin works best, and the ears should be cleaned regularly.
Training: This can be a very sensitive breed so gentle and patient training is a must. Consistency works best with this short and stubborn breed. The Basset Hound has the tendency to go off sniffing completely disregarding his master so fun techniques work best.
Activity: Basset Hounds have the tendency to overeat therefore should be given plenty of exercise to keep him healthy. Normally a lazy breed, this dog should be taken on regulated walks and should be allowed a free roam in a safe, fenced in area.
Ownership: If you are looking for Basset Hound puppies for sale from reputable Basset Hound breeders or to adopt a Basset Hound from a Basset Hound rescue then make sure you understand as much about the dog breeds you are interested in as you can. Every puppy breed is different. Begin your research by reading the breed information about the Basset Hound puppy above.
From that information what would you say?

Do you know why Bassets have such short legs? Because you're always dragging them around. Meaning they are very stubborn!!! If you have a big space for them to roam in like a yard or field they are happy, But if you will be required to walk them around on a leash they will be trouble. Plus Basset are from the hound family and they all tend to be very independent.
So I would ask myself some very important questions like what am I looking for in a pet? Read Read Read. I think there is a sight called "perfect pet match"

why are you asking a silly question like that and if you really wanted a basset you would look into the breed beforehand. I have 4 bassets 1 of which is rescued and they are all great..apart from when your making or eating food or taking them for a walk..they bark in excitment but that is the only trouble.I have an 8 year old and they love him!

They are supposed to be great pets, but their personal care is high maintenance. Their wrinkles have to be washed daily to prevent bacterial infections and they can be prone to ear infections as well with those big floppy things. They can be prone to joint and back problems as well. Check out a few Basset Hound forums (you can Google for them) to browse and see what others say about them.

Like all dogs they make good pets when the owner knows what they are doing. The only tip I can give you is make sure to buy a tall bowl so that is ears can't fall into his food! Most are quite lazy and they tend to slobber a bit (Not quite Boxer standard but nearly). Some also have a bark that is bigger than they are!
My friends sounds like a German Shepherd and people are very surprised when she opens the door!

first,, why do you want a basset?/ is it because you like how they look?? you must always choose a breed based on your lifestyle and also for what the breed was originally bred for..... bassets are hunting dogs first and foremost,, they will take off if allowed off leash,,, this isn't disobedience,, it is simply what they were bred to do,, run and follow their noses.... they howl and bark ALOT... my suggestion, would be to go to AKC.ORG and read /look at all the different breeds you will find out which breeds fit your lifestyle.. etc... good luck
