Egads, if some of those folks think those are simple recipes, it's a darned good thing you didn't ask for a complicated one!
Take about half a box of powdered sugar and add half a stick of margarine or butter, then add 2 tablespoons water and a teaspoon of vanilla. Mix this together slowly until there's no dry powdered sugar left, then beat well. It will be soft and smooth and creamy when it's done. To make this icing chocolate instead, pour half a box of powdered sugar into the bowl and then remove about a quarter cup of it and put it back into the box. Add a quarter cup of cocoa instead. Proceed as directed. Add a few drops of flavoring or coloring if you like. If your icing is too dry, add a little water a teaspoon at a time. If it's too thin, dust the top with powdered sugar and mix it in well. Repeat if necessary.

1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1/2 cup water
8 cups sifted confectioners' sugar

Soften 2 tablespoons of butter. Add about 1 1/2 cup confection sugar and cut in with a fork. Add 1/4 tsp. vanilla or almond flavoring. Slowly add a drizzle of milk and mix. Continue the last step until desired consistency is obtained. If you add too much milk, thicken with more sugar. Spread.
