It depends on how good your teacher is. I took vocal lessons for a year when I was 11, and my teacher was horrible. My singing actually got *worse*, and I began to pick up bad singing habbits. (i.e.: singing more through the nose). I quit, and just began singing on my own, for school plays and such, and got much better practicing by myself and tape recording my voice, to listen to again.
However, I did start vocal lessons three months ago, again, and I have an amazing teacher, who actually works with me on improving my range and such.
So, if I were you, just ask around and see where you can take good lessons with experienced teachers, and go for it!

#1 - if you are a terrible singer, you will not become any better. You have to have an ear for singing. Singing lessons help you learn to control breathing, diaphragm usage, vocal range, intonation and pitch. If you are talented, vocal lessons will keep you from destroying your wonderful pipes. It will teach you to use your voice properly. It doesn't make you "better faster," by any means. It'll help you sing proper, instead of belting and yelling.

Vocal lessons from a good voice teacher will make you "better" because you'll learn techniques that you won't pick up from just singing all the time. You'll learn breathing techniques, you'll be able to increase your range, you'll learn how to do things with your voice that you won't be able to figure out on your own. However, if you go to someone who doesn't know what they're doing, it won't help at all and may actually hurt.

This really is a silly question
It's not rocket science... of course singing lessons will improve your voice dramaticaly, theres an example on Bret mannings website of a guy incresing his range my a whole octive within minutes.
ok so you can sing all the time, yes you'll get better just by practising, but that doesn't mean you'll sing in a healthy way... and i doubt you'd ever reach your true potential. You don't need an ear for music, or ryhthm, obviously it helps, but it can be taught, yes you'd need to work hard and be patient, but it CAN be taught.
the only people who say.. "you've either got it or you ain't" are people who...
A) can't sing a note and have never been for lessons, or if they have gave up on it or experienced a bad voice teacher
or
B) sing naturally and have never been for lessons or experienced a bad voice teacher.
The voice is an instrument... we can all probably play chopsticks on the piano, if we sat at it for a couple of days, we might even get to using two hands ...but how many of us could play bethoven without some knoledge of music or lessons????
people who can sing exceptionally well without vocal coaching are far and few between...I'm refering to the likes of Barbara Striesand, who is a natural singer...so singers...heres a challenge, all those who haven't had singing lessons..
lets see if you can belt out "don't rain on my parade" by miss striesand,
why not post it on u tube, for us all to enjoy.
If you wanna sing....and i mean really sing, then take lessons
if you wanna perform a couple of songs on karaoke and impress your mates...well, just practise!!!

yes, because you are recieving lessons from a trained perfessional. at least that's what i've heard. i've self trained more than half my life, (since i was 6) and have been told that i have a gift, and an amazing voice from people taking voice lessons your whole life. This is true for some people, but if you feel like taking voice lessons will help you become better than you already are, you should. I just train myself though.
