1st every male living in the USA is required to register for Selective Service within 30 days of his 18th birthday.

2nd Selective service holds what is called he lottery every year where like in bingo all the days of the year all 366 (Feb 29) get blown out of the hopper at random.

3rd should the draft be reactivated they will notify the draft boards of each county(they are still there) that they must supply X number of bodies. the county will notify the number required starting with the first Birthday in lottery and continue down the list until that number is achieved. {Note: the last three years of the draft back in the 70's only took 19 year old young men but the law reads anyone between the age of 18 and 36.}

4th the draft was stopped by executive order by President Nixon and can be started by any President who decides to reverse that order. NOTE: Congress had nothing to do with the all volunteer military!

I kind of agree with Vince. I would like to see how many of these mean spirited Republicans who talk tough about what we should do actually step forward and back up all their tough talk. You can bet the Bush twins won't go. The day of 9-11 I was on a construction site riding the skip hoist up to my elevation and this one iron worker was talking all kinds of trash about what WE were going to do. He's back home making good union money. Talks cheap. I asked him if he had a son, he said yes. I asked how old, he said 14. I said he's just right. He said for what? I said for the draft. He said there ain't no draft. I told him there will be and his son will be just the right age. The color almost drained from his face when he thought about what I said. It's not the same when it's your son and not someone elses. So all you war lovin conservatives I say go sign up and maybe that way we can avoid a draft. There actually is a draft of sorts going on right now. It's called getting called up. Guys who have been out for years are getting called back to active duty. It's happening every day. Guys are getting extended and going back for there third and fourth time. That is how Bush is avoiding the draft right now. The next guy are Woman will face a tough decision because of what Bush is doing. My son is 14, I imagine he will have to go. I don't want him to naturally but if he goe's I told him to go Airborne. Be with the best. Because in a draftee Army I want to make sure I can count on the guy in the fox hole with me. Our volentere Army is the best, but George Dubbya needs more young bodys for cannon fodder. Oh by the way, did you hear that they are asking former service men up to SIXTY yrs. old to voluntere for service. Not in combat naturally. But in other fields so they can turn loose a bunch of hard chargin pay roll clerks loose on the enemy. It would be funny if it wasn't true.

It is likely there will not be a draft unless absolutely necessary. In the past I know they have done it lottery style. In WWI they actually got blindfolded and drew numbers out of a fishbowl (each man having a different number). In the past it has been stupid stuff like that, but that would never fly today. My guess is they would not let people know how it worked, they would do it and keep it confidential - avoid the whole favoritism and prejudice conflict.
As far as 30 year olds go, they would start with men in their twenties and teens before selecting them.

If it does happen, I would like to see how many of these people that bash Bush all the time, attempt to dodge the draft. I will state again that I am not his biggest fan either, but I was in the Army. I would really love to see how many people that talk all this sh**, dodge the draft.

The last one was on the lottery system based on the 365 days of the year.Each day represent a birthday. Lets say the fist date drawn is Oct. 6th. All those eligible people born on Oct 6 will be the first ones to go, until there are no more, then the process continues to number two, and so on.

Uhm, it wasn't the Democrats who brough up the draft. Bush had been considering it. It answer the question, men will have to register.

They'd make every guy over 18 and eligible for service register and then they'd randomly send out draft cards.

There would be sensible deferments for the more important folks.
