I have built FE series engines for racing of many sizes including the 390. It will produce a lot more horsepower than a 289 will, but... It won't fit without redesigning the whole front end.
It has been done, but it is not recommended. The 351 will be enough hassle to fit. With the 351, you have a reasonable amount of power and still be able to turn corners.

Sure it will. You will need to do several things though.
Mainly gusseting and strengthening the front end and using completely different suspension members. This will also necessitate a trimmed drive shaft, and since you're doing that, replace the rear axle with a heavier narrowed one to help accommodate the wider wheels you'll be using and the extra horsepower.
There have been several street class Falcons rods with the 429/460 as well.
here are some places where you may find a lot of help and encouragement.

you can build a 289 . and still work on it . it'll have more HP than a 390 and when you hit the gas it'll be like the trigger on a Drill .
keep in mind gear ratio .
as for 390 ,not with out major alterations to the body and making a frame .
351 or 302 will fit too .

it may fit but the 351 will give you a better balanced , more serviceable car , i shudder to think about replacing the rear plugs on the drivers side.
