younger people and seniors get dehydrated more easily than adults (aged 21 through 50, let's say). you should drink water more often than your mom does, as a very general rule of thumb.
the water you need also depends on how active you are, how warm the weather is, how much you weigh, and your body fat/lean muscle ratio. whoever posted that it varies person to person is absolutely right.
you will know that you've had enough water to drink if:
you drink as a matter of habit, not if you are thirsty. if you wait until you feel thirst, you're already dehydrated.
you urinate regularly and somewhat frequently.
your urine is clear or almost clear. yellow urine indicates many solutes and waste products...there should be more water than urea in your urine.
the 8 ounce/8 glass a day guideline is a very VERY general thing...it's more of a myth than a rule of thumb. you will most likely need more water than that...not including soda or coffee, which leech water out of your system.
start with drinking 2 cups at each meal, and 1 cup in between meals (about 10). add more water to that before after and during exercise. play around with it, and see what works for you. you can substitute juices for water, but pure water (better when cold for absorption) is best.

If you are thristy your body will let you know 8 glasses they say is the guideline. I barely even drink 4 glasses a day. It has been known that if you over and over drink it can be bad for you. Someone died once for drinking too much water they basically drowned.

Some experts say 1.5 - 2litres a day, but they got it wrong - they forgot to take into account all the water in the food we eat !!!
I would suggest about a litre (three glasses) - but generally it's up to you, there is no right and no wrong answer here.

the story about drinking 2 litres a day is false, your body needs 2 litres a day but gets the majority of it from food, let her drink as much or as little as she wants, it's her body and it will know how much she needs.

how much water you need will depend on body size, the daily level of activity and the time of year. for a competitive athlete in season I would aim for 1 gallon a day.
the key is to not let yourself get dehydrated. when you "feel" thirsty the body is already dehydrated.
