He took the puppy to the vet 2 months ago and she gave them some sort of oil 2 give to the dog once a day. That didn't work so now they've gone up to two pills and switched to a chicken and rice dog food. (pro-plan) They've tried to bathe the dog w/ special shampoo, but I think they bathe him to often, drying out his skin even more. What should he do? My bro said that its like the dog has really bad dandruff, and he is shedding all over the place, but he doesn't look sick or bald. ( is he just shedding 'cause he's scratching so much?) Please help.....my bro is a serious neat freak and he's just about ready to get rid of the dog if they can't fix this. Oh, they've also tried putting a oil/moisturizer directly on his skin and that didn't work either.

I have dealt with skin problems with dogs and what Ive found to work best is using a infant baby wash Gerber Grins and Giggles, the oatmeal type, wash him once a week water not too hot or too cold, if you feel like you want to add some type of emollient to his skin afterward, use udder cream and it works wonders. this will save you alot of money on vet bills and special meds and give him beautiful skin and a smile on his Dobie face

The first thing they have to do is stop bathing this poor dog so much - doesn't matter what kind of shampoo you use, it's going to dry the skin and coat, especially in the winter.
The best thing they can do for this puppy is give him a salmon oil capsule every day. My dogs get them every day during the winter (and 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil on their food every day the rest of the year). The salmon oil will make a tremendous difference in a couple of weeks if given every day.
The other thing they can do for his coat is buy a product made for dogs called Linatone. The salmon oil will help the most for his skin, though.

Is the oil that you are referring to Derm Caps? You may want to tell your brother to ask his vet for a product called Pro Derma, some people do see results with that. You may also want to tell him to ask his veterinarian if a Perscription Diet may help such as Eukanuba FP or Purina HA, Hills ZD or ZD Ultra are all used to help with skin problems, they can only be purchase through a veterinarians office, but they do work. Your The special shampoo that they are using may need to be changed to another and make sure that whoever is bathing the dog rinses the dog really well. If it were my dog I would definately reconsider the ProPlan line of food (to many fillers). Dobermans are known for skin problems and allergies so you may have to consider having your veterinarian perform some allergy tests (simple blood test), although you may feel the test is expensive it will give you a guide as to what your dog may be allergic to. If all else fails, you may want to consider consulting with a Veterinary Dermatologist they can be extremely helpful as well. Good Luck

It could be allergies, too much bathing or a shampoo that bothers him, or lack of fatty acids in his diet.
My doberman pinscher had this problem, and the vet recommended fatty acid pills in his food, and they worked great. But you can also give him a teaspoon of oil once or twice a week, since the pills didn't work...
Please don't let them get rid of their dog because of a health problem as simple as that. Take him to the vet again, or another vet, and get some more opinions. It may be allergies, and the vet may prescribe benadryl or something like that.

My dog Chester has the same thing. Our vet couldn't Identify it, so we took him to a doggie dermatologist. The dog might have Canine Hypothyriodism. It is common in Rotties, German Shepherds, and Doberman Pinschers.

Unless a dog gets skunked or something, you only have to bathe it once a year. Doing it too often will dry the skin out.
Add some tuna (in oil) to the dog's diet. The problem will go away in a week.

Don't wash the dog as often....brush regularly and try a dog food called avoderm that has essential oils that are good for the dog's skin.
