Retarded has been, well, retarded for a long time. Developmentally disabled was the next acceptable term and is still used at times. Learning disabled is a more up to date term. Challenged is also an accepted term. A better usage is probably to find out what the real problem is such as Downs Syndrom amnd use the correct term for the specific disability.

You are a socially conscious person! You are so right, the term retarded has a negative connotation. I have heard the terms developmentally challenged, intellectual or developmental disability, having special learning needs...

My 3-year-old daughter is "special", the term most often used now is "developmentally disabled". I've been known to turn nasty when I hear "retarded", particulary in a joke.

Maybe you're thinking of MR/DD (mental retardation and developmental disability).

Generally,it's not appropriate to say that someone IS retarded, but it's okay to refer to someone as HAVING mental retardation or a developmental disability.
