I was prescribed Metronidazole by my GP for bacterial vaginosis and have been getting REALLY bad side-effects. I started the course on Friday morning, and the BV hasn't cleared up yet. However, at 430 this morning I woke up FREEZING cold and within a couple of minutes I vomited, only just making it to the toilet. I've felt dizzy and headachey all day, and was sick again at about 3pm. At about 6pm tonight, I walked in to the bathroom and fell over (? collapsed? I don't know! I don't know if I passed out!) I know that I seriously whacked my shoulder and back!
I called NHS Direct at 630, they're not going to be able to phone me back for about 4 hours. I'm due to take another one at about 830pm, and I don't know whether to take it or not!!
Please can somebody advise me?! I can't find anything on the web - all it says is "complete the course".
Please help!!

There was no patient leaflet in the box, it's 830pm on Sunday night, the pharmacy is closed and my GP emergency number goes straight through to NHS direct.

If you experience any of the following ***serious side effects***, STOP taking metronidazole and seek emergency medical attention:
an allergic reaction (swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; shortness of breath; closing of your throat; or hives);
seizures;
numbness or tingling;
dizziness or loss of coordination; or
severe diarrhea.
Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take metronidazole and talk to your doctor if you experience
darkening of your urine;
nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite;
an unpleasant metallic taste in your mouth;
constipation or mild diarrhea;
headache; or
swollen or sore tongue.

Some of the side effects are nausea and dizziness. I would stop taking them asap. Were you informed that you should not take alcohol with these tablets as that can make you extremely poorly. I would suggest to keep ringin the NHS direct line as thay have to log all calls and if your number keeps appearing they may just answer a bit quicker. Hope you feel better soon! By the way if you type in metronidazole you can usually find a PIL.

Any drug can have side-effects. What is most concerning is you said you fell over in the bathroom but don't know if you 'passed out'. That can be an indication you did. Wether this is a side-effect or not, I would not take the medication until you have spoken with your doctor. Most physician offices have staff on an 'on-call' status to assist with these things. As for the dizziness, nausea, and possible 'passing out' I would probably be ready for a trip to the ER. DEFINITELY contact your doctor ASAP though.

I ended up at A & E because I was covered from head to foot in a severe rash because of metronidazole. Never had any of your symptoms though and it's the only thing that I've ever known that I'm allergic to.

You should be going to see your gp tomorrow again. Or at the very least call and find out what is happening. If you are seriously worried you can call your pharmacy and they should be able to tell you what to do for the short term, over the phone.

Stop taking the meds and go to a clinic if your doc is unavailable.
The symptoms you're having may be unrelated to the meds, but until you know for sure, you shouldn't take any more.

If you think rationally you will know to stop if the side effects are as severe as you say.
Wait for the NHS directs advice! and then see your doctor as soon as possible
